About the role

Balfour Beatty's Power Transmission and Distribution business is looking to make a critical leadership hire and appoint a Technical Director to join the Isle of Skye project.

This project-based role will lead and manage the Engineering Delivery Teams in the delivery of all design and engineering requirements for schemes from identification of opportunities to completion of construction.

As Technical Director, you will be responsible for the full engineering scope—including permanent and temporary works, methods, materials, and land survey—while upholding the highest standards of safety, quality, and stakeholder management. You will work closely with the Project Director to shape strategy and ensure the project is delivered on time and within budget.

What you'll be doing
  • Providing technical leadership and guidance for all aspects of engineering delivery.
  • Overseeing the production and review of designs to support pricing and construction, ensuring solutions are practical, safe, and delivered on schedule.
  • Managing internal and external design teams, contracts, and handovers to operations.
  • Leading the delivery of temporary works and supporting site construction.
  • Creating, implementing, and monitoring the materials strategy and managing the materials team and laboratory.
  • Managing land survey activities to support construction.
  • Recruiting, developing, and supporting a high-performing, diverse engineering team.
  • Monitoring team performance against budget and reporting regularly.
  • Supporting project strategy and governance processes.
  • Ensuring all work complies with company safety rules, health & safety legislation, and environmental standards.
  • Embracing new technologies and best practices to drive continuous improvement.
  • Building strong relationships with stakeholders and promoting open, respectful communication.
Who we're looking for
  • Significant experience in leading large / major projects in a technical environment (experience in Power/Electrical sectors is welcome but not essential).
  • Experience of working with Engineering / Design teams and contracts within a multi-disciplined engineering environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with programme management and mobilisation.
  • Experience of client and stakeholder management.
  • Zero harm approach to health and safety and working knowledge of safety by design.
