Role description:

As part of our growth, our Ecology team seeks a Technical Director. Our team of 60+ ecologists has over 30 years of experience in ecological surveys, assessments, and providing advice on soil, land use, hydrology, sustainable drainage, arboriculture, ecosystem services, natural capital, biodiversity strategies, and cultural heritage. We have completed over 2,000 projects across the UK, Europe, and beyond for public and private clients.

The Technical Director will oversee the quality control, coordination, and completion of ecological projects across diverse client sectors, including urban and greenfield residential developments, regulators, local governments, infrastructure, and energy projects. The role involves coaching and leading teams, ensuring project delivery within time, budget, and safety standards, and managing client relationships to exceed expectations. Personal development is prioritized, and the role offers the chance to work with industry-recognized leaders. The position can be based anywhere in the UK.

Role Accountabilities

  • Manage projects, including budgets, meetings, client advice, and bid production
  • Ensure technical quality and approval of project deliverables
  • Oversee ecological surveys, analyze results, and produce reports and assessments
  • Advise on ecological issues across a broad range of topics
  • Prepare license applications, develop mitigation and monitoring plans
  • Supervise mitigation and monitoring activities, liaising with authorities
  • Manage team performance and provide training
  • Design research projects and contribute to best practice development
  • Manage successful bids

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Extensive leadership experience with knowledge of ecological principles, legislation, and impact assessment (EcIA)
  • Proven track record in ecological appraisals and Environmental Statements
  • Knowledge of natural capital and biodiversity net gain is desirable
  • Expertise in specific plant and/or animal groups and survey skills
  • Full member of CIEEM and Chartered Ecologist or equivalent
  • Survey and/or development licenses are a plus
