Job summary

The University of Northampton is seeking a capable Life Sciences laboratory postholder to support the delivery of learning, teaching and research by ensuring the safe, effective and efficient operation of specialist laboratory facilities and equipment.

You will prepare, maintain and develop laboratory resources, demonstrate specialist techniques such as molecular biology and cell culture, support practical teaching sessions, and oversee biosafety compliance.

About the Job

Contract Type: 6-Month Fixed Term Contract

The postholder will support the delivery of learning, teaching and research within Life Sciences by ensuring the safe, effective and efficient operation of specialist laboratory facilities and equipment.

The role includes preparing, maintaining and developing laboratory resources, demonstrating specialist techniques to students and staff, supporting practical teaching sessions, and overseeing compliance with health and safety and biosafety requirements. The postholder will also contribute to research activity, equipment servicing, stock control, procurement, student support, outreach activity and wider Faculty priorities.

About You

Candidates should bring recent experience of working in a Life Sciences laboratory environment, with strong technical knowledge and practical competence in relevant specialist techniques such as molecular biology and cell culture. They should be able to maintain equipment and specialist resources, interpret technical requirements into practical delivery, and support both teaching and research activity. Strong organisational skills, the ability to work collaboratively across teams, confidence in supporting students individually and in groups, and a commitment to safe working practices and continuous professional development are essential.

Qualifications
  • Essential HND, degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area, and/or equivalent higher-level industry experience.
  • Desirable Professional recognition as an HEA Associate Fellow and/or a teaching qualification recognised by HESA, or a willingness to achieve this within a reasonable timeframe.
