The Role

As our London Market Technical Claims Counsel you will lead the technical claims handling for Hiscox London Market and be a member of the London Market Claims Leadership Team which will help set and shape technical oversight of claims and technical claims standards for Hiscox London Market. The role of the Technical Claims Team is to ensure we meet our obligations to our customers, manage claims specific reserve risk and provide our Hiscox colleagues with timely and accurate insights into our business which shape our risk appetite, products and pricing. This is an important role as how we handle claims distinguishes us from our peers and underpins our brand promise that “we see the people behind the policy”.

Working closely with the London Market Claims Leadership and the Group Claims Team you will drive the continuous development and improvement of the London Market Hiscox Claims service and commitment to do what is right for our customers. Our technical claims handling will shape and continuously evolve our claims service so that our special claim’s philosophy continues to resonate and inspire our customers, trading partners and colleagues that we work with and hope to work with in the future.


Principle Duties and Responsibilities

To oversee, align and develop our technical claims handling across Hiscox London Market.

Lead and drive key technical claims initiatives across Hiscox London Market.

Work with the QA function, managers and education committee to assess whether Claims Teams have the necessary technical expertise, oversight and technical input to deliver an exceptional claims service.

Oversight of the technical aspects of claims handling to include the overseeing of forums on technical claims issues impacting claims and ensuring that reports are collated, packs created and minutes and action points taken for those forums. This will include claims issues such as overseeing litigation management and systemic risks impacting claims.

To effectively manage claims specific reserve risk with controls around escalations, roundtables, monitoring and reporting both within London Market and in line with Group Claims expectations including the monitoring of the Claims Watchlist for London Market.

Provide support to the London Market Claims Team to enhance technical claims handling and develop expertise.

Ensure that the Hiscox Claims Reserving Philosophy is consistently followed through the London Market Claims Team.

Collaborate with teams inside and outside of Claims to ensure that the London Market Claims Team are consistently providing technical claims insights into our business which shape our risk appetite, products and pricing.

Work closely with the Group Claims Leadership Team and across all Hiscox Business Units on technical issues and help support wider claims technical oversight.

Provide support to the London Market Claims Team on issues that may include a technical claims element such as fraud or quality assurance.

Handle both referrals from the claims team and personally handle complex claims during a surge event or where in depth senior oversite is needed on a specific claim.



Person specification

You will be passionate about delivering an exceptional market leading technical claims service.

Have experience of overseeing and developing technical claims across multiple lines of insurance business including both first party and third party especially in the Lloyd’s market.

A proven record in developing and driving oversight and consistency of technical claims handling.

Enthusiastic and a team player with good relationship and empathy skills.

Excellent analytical, communication and influencing skills and an ability to take the lead on solving problems.

Experience and understanding the significant of a reserving philosophy for the claim life cycle on both an individual and collective basis.

Experience of using analytical techniques to interpret data and produce meaningful insights into technical claims issues.

Qualified solicitors (or equivalent) with litigation experience are preferred but not necessary.
