Job summary

This is an opportunity to work at band 7 level leading the Amputee Outpatient team within the Outpatient Physiotherapy Service on a part time bases, permenantly

The post holder will lead and manage a team of Physiotherapists alongside the MDT Band 7s, to deliver high quality evidence based assessment and treatment skills. To assess and treat adult and Paediatric patients following Amputation or limb absence.

You need to possess excellent communication skills and negotiation skills in order to manage this patient group, as well as liaise with the close knit MDT team.

You will need to be able to understand the relevant conditions, as well as pain, and be able to explain this to other staff and your patients. Teaching others will be part of your role and training for you will be provided as required. Skills in Early walking Aids and Prosthetics are essential for the post holder. MSK experience is preferred, with understanding of common MSK problems and there basic management.

NUH supports work flexibly across campus, and occasionally in the community to meet the needs of therapy services.

Main duties of the job

Leading the Physiotherapy service in a dynamic and ever evolving speciality, providing a responsive and timely service.

Providing a supportive environment for team members under your direct management, including undertaking annual appraisals and managing health and wellbeing.

Supporting your Clinical specialist in developing the service, through projects, research and Audit.

Working as a close knit MDT, flexibly working to support the entire team not just physiotherapy. To support ward staff in a consultation capacity to facilitate the inpatient to outpatient flow.

Contributing to the education and teaching of all team members including students, preceptees, B6s and support workers, satellite services and NUH teams involved in amputee care

Ensuring that high quality, evidenced based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.

Undertake Duty task involving non patient facing triage, daily emergency equipment checks, operational management, urgent problem solving, and communication with satellite service.

Ensuring that NUH values and behaviours are embedded in everyday practice.

The successful applicant will demonstrate advanced level amputee therapy skills in assessment and diverse interventions to facilitate excellent care in Mobility centre Environment

You will have excellent communication and team working skills, with the ability to apply problem-solving skills to patient care and leadership tasks. As this role will include working with patients and their families during potentially stressful life events, including end of life care, and decision to not issue prosthetics. A compassionate and resilient character is required.

Contribute to the national drive to improve care for the wider population by membership to BACPAR, attending conference and courses relevant to your role. Developing your own practice to incorporate supporting research.

This post will allow a physiotherapist with a keen interest in team leadership outpatient care to expand clinical skills and leadership of a busy and responsive service, with a focus on leading and developing staff to support the patient pathway whilst promoting excellent patient care.

Training & Qualification
  • Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registration
  • Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities
Experience
  • Wide ranging and extensive experience of working within specialist area
  • Knowledge of current best practice within a clinical specialty
Communication and relationship skills
  • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
  • Communicate complex patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors
Analytical and Judgement skills
  • Analyse information from clinical assessments and make judgements about appropriate interventions for highly complex patients
  • Able to make decisions about the treatment needs of highly complex patients
  • Lead on the development of improvements in service delivery and clinical practice using evidence based practice to recommend changes
Planning and organisation skills
  • Able to plan the delivery of a service for a specialist area where there is variable capacity and fluctuating demand

Physical skills
  • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation if applicable.
  • Able to use and/or manoeuvre a range of medical devices including, for example, handling/assistive and anthropometric equipment if applicable.

  • Undertake out of hours duties as required.
  • Able to travel to required areas within and beyond the Trust Maintain competence in respiratory care where appropriate
