Team Leader – Environmental Health Food / H&S
North East London
Hybrid role
Up to £485 per day (DoE)
Inside IR35 (via umbrella company)
6 Month Initial Contract

Are you ready to lead enforcement, compliance, and service delivery within our Food and Health & Safety team? As an Operational Team Leader, you will support the existing team leader in managing our food hygiene and safety standards inspection programme, investigating complaints, and overseeing enforcement actions to ensure businesses comply with regulations.
Reporting into the Public Protection Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring effective enforcement and compliance across one of four specialist teams—Environmental Health (Environmental Protection), Environmental Health (Food & Health and Safety), Licensing, or Trading Standards. You will oversee team management, service delivery, and regulatory enforcement, ensuring high standards for businesses and communities.

Your role as Team Leader:-
  • Managing the Food and H&S team, ensuring effective service delivery and regulatory compliance and leading the food hygiene inspection programme, handling complaints and enforcing compliance.
  • Overseeing health & safety investigations, workplace accident reviews, and infectious disease control.
  • Providing expert advice on complex cases, guiding the team in decision-making and enforcement strategies.
  • Conducting 1:1s, HR functions, and performance reviews to ensure team development and efficiency.
  • Managing statutory contracts, budgets, and external service providers to optimise service delivery.
  • Supporting officers attending court, leading prosecutions, and ensuring enforcement cases reach successful conclusions.
  • Work with elected Members, agencies, businesses, and regulatory bodies to build strong partnerships.
  • Conduct site visits, assisting officers in inspections and enforcement actions when needed.
Your previous experience as Team Leader:-
  • Proven leadership experience within public protection services and overseeing multi-disciplinary operations.
  • Strong knowledge of statutory duties, compliance, and regulatory enforcement.
  • Experience in delivering successful programmes and projects from inception to completion.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement, working with government bodies, law enforcement, and businesses.
  • Ability to manage reports, briefings, and technical documentation to support operational strategy.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety enforcement, workplace regulations, and compliance procedures.
  • Strong understanding of food standards, regulatory frameworks, and legal enforcement.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary enforcement caseloads with strategic oversight.
  • Proficiency in IT systems, including MS Office and case management tools.
  • A full driving licence, enabling site visits as required.
Qualifications:-
  • Relevant qualifications in Environmental Health, Licensing, or Trading Standards.
  • Post-qualification experience and competency under the Food Law Code of Practice
  • Professional memberships (where applicable) and regulatory certifications.
  • Strong proficiency in ICT and mobile working tools.
  • Understanding of health and safety, safeguarding, and confidentiality standards.
