Job description

The Team Leader is a key frontline leadership role that supports the Site Supervisor in overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring team performance is aligned with site goals, and helping to maintain an efficient and safe working environment. While the Team Leader works under the guidance of the Site Supervisor, they are responsible for the direct oversight and coaching of frontline team members, ensuring that operations run smoothly on a shift-by-shift basis.


The role focuses on execution, team development, and collaboration with other site leadership functions, while promoting a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement within the team. The Team Leader is a visible presence on the floor, actively helping resolve issues, maintain high standards, and ensure that tasks are completed effectively and on time.


While they will still be expected to take ownership of team-related tasks and responsibilities, their involvement in strategic activities will be limited compared to the Site Supervisor.

Team Leadership & Daily Execution

  • Support the Site Supervisor in overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring that all team tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with quality standards.
  • Lead the team during shifts, ensuring performance standards are met across key areas like output, safety, and quality.
  • Coach and guide team members to ensure clear understanding of job roles, expectations, and tasks.
  • Assist in delegating work assignments and prioritising tasks to ensure that the shift is managed effectively and goals are met.

Operational Efficiency & Continuous Improvement

  • Support the identification of operational inefficiencies or areas for improvement and contribute to the implementation of solutions at the team level.
  • Assist in tracking team performance against KPIs and ensure that necessary actions are taken to maintain or improve output and safety.
  • Work with the Site Supervisor to implement continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and addressing operational challenges.

People Development & Team Culture

  • Foster a positive team culture, encouraging cooperation, accountability, and a strong work ethic.
  • Provide feedback to team members on performance and behaviour, reinforcing strong practices and addressing issues as they arise.
  • Coach and mentor team members, offering support for their professional development while promoting a culture of ownership and accountability.
  • Assist with team training and support the Site Supervisor in ensuring that all team members are compliant with site-specific procedures and safety standards.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure that the team adheres to site-specific safety standards and health guidelines.
  • Take immediate action if any safety concerns arise and escalate issues to the Site Supervisor as necessary.
  • Help with routine safety inspections, hazard identification, and the implementation of corrective actions for safety-related issues.

Communication & Reporting

  • Maintain clear communication with team members during shifts, ensuring they are well-informed and aligned on the day’s goals and priorities.
  • Support shift handovers to ensure that there is a smooth transition between teams and that all important information is passed on.
  • Report performance updates, challenges, and team-related issues to the Site Supervisor in a timely manner, ensuring that information is shared clearly and effectively.

Required Skills & Knowledge:

Passion for animal welfare
IAT, BTEC, Home Office Personal License or other animal related qualifications advantageous
The job holder should have a good understanding of the production methods for the department that they are working in as well as relevant biosecurity measures and species-specific abnormal conditions
Experience with transgenic, genetically modified and mutant animal models is highly desirable in relevant departments, including the understanding of advanced colony management processes for applied breeding schemes
High level of computer literacy and familiarity with essential programs such as Microsoft Office
Understanding of data integrity and maintenance of databases essential
Familiarity with commercially available animal husbandry databases
Proven experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team, ability to work under stressful conditions while maintaining a professional demeanour
Previous experience of team leadership/training desirable
Proactive attitude, desire to meet and exceed targets around production and quality
Solid understanding of A(SP)A
