Job Description

The Commodity Risk team in London comprises of members of the Risk team supporting Anglo American Marketing. These are Market Risk & Reporting, Credit Risk and Risk Operations. The Risk team is part of the 2nd line of defence of Marketing’s activities. The team is responsible for measuring and managing risk with Marketing’s equity and trading activities, as well as ensuring that those risk are adequately mitigated.

Purpose:

The Team Lead oversees the market risk & reporting across all commodities and is the primary Business partner for Front Office, Finance and IM on related matters in London.

As a senior member of the London based Risk team, the role will provide leadership and indirect oversight of London Risk team members. This will include provide guidance and support to members of the Credit Risk and Risk Operations team that are operating out of the same timezone and fostering a team culture in the office.

The role will interface closely with Risk leaders based in Singapore (or other regions) to ensure that deliverables to the business are managed effectively.

As the senior Risk team member in the London, the role is critical to managing stakeholder in London, Europe, Africa and LATAM timezone. As part of the Follow the Sun operating model, the role will act to coordinate key business deliverables and stay connected with other hubs in Singapore and Shanghai.

Responsibilities include:

Performance & Delivery

Market Risk & Reporting (75%)

  • Generate (daily, weekly and monthly) risk reports using the implemented risk system. Ad-hoc reporting as requested by the Manager or Head of Commodity Risk.
  • Acts as the main regional focal point with Front Office, Finance and IM on day-to-day issues, responsible for creating solutions and maintain good customer relationships. This role will be the primary Business partner for Front Office on day to day market risk matters.
  • Provide support, guidance and training to team, having ownership in ensuring that team performs in line with their daily, weekly and monthly deliverables.
  • Assumes the role and duty of Manager – Market Risk & Reporting in their absence (if needed).
  • Collaborate across teams and functions in identifying system and process improvements, alongside milestone projects to improve productivity and business requirements.
  • Analyse trading results, including positions, P&L and limits utilisation. The analysis can require a very high degree of technical competence, requiring advanced Excel and SQL knowledge.
  • Identify market risk issues and provide suitable advice, including limit setting.
  • Ensure trading strategies, including options, are understood. Monitor compliance of Front Office activities with the Market Risk Policy and escalate breaches of limits in accordance with operating procedures.
  • Review new deals and products for market risk implications.
  • Perform calculation of Risk Metrics including, but not limited to VaR, Stress Testing and Back-testing for the physical and financial portfolios.
  • Champion the accuracy of trade and reporting data in CTRM systems and interfaces to the existing Risk systems.
  • Validating market data/commodity prices that go into the Risk systems, to ensure accuracy of risk reports.
  • Assist in the rolling out and UAT (User Acceptance Testing) of Risk system improvements.
  • Champion Market Risk & Reporting initiatives and regional business activities.
  • Champion collaboration with Risk team members in other regions as part of a seamless interface to the business and support Follow the Sun operations.

London Risk Team Leadership (25%)

  • Provide leadership of the team in London, including fostering an environment of collaboration and sharing.
  • Act as the escalation point in the London office for Risk matters. Act quickly to manage issues and support team members, and ensure clear communication & handover to Singapore team as part of the Follow the Sun operating model.
  • Actively manage stakeholder in the Europe, Africa and LATAM time zones. Understand key business initiatives and seek the ensure the London team members are kept informed and partnering the business effectively.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in finance or quantitative-related
  • Greater than 5 years of professional experience in Commodities Risk

Specific Knowledge requirements:

  • Expert understanding of market risk concepts, including VaR, liquidity and limit setting
  • Expert knowledge of commodity products, including physical and financial
  • In-depth knowledge of the calculations behind P&L and exposure calculations for both physical and financial commodity trades which includes options.
  • Knowledge of options, both vanilla and exotic
  • Commercial awareness of P&L drivers and strategies in a trading environment
  • Credit Risk and KYC knowledge desirable
  • Ability to explain and defend technical concepts, in a clear, understandable manner to colleagues and senior managers within the Marketing BU.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines in a trading environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; fluency in English (verbal and written) is essential
  • Programming ability desirable
