A little more about your role…We are seeking an Associate Director to be based out of our Birmingham office who can:
- Lead and develop our Birmingham Transport Planning Team, working effectively alongside our Mobility Planning North Discipline Team Lead and other Communities and Mobility Team Leads – this is a significant opportunity for the right individual to shape the local team in line with our wider strategic objectives
- Take full accountability for the performance of the Birmingham Transport Planning Team, across our People, Client, Operations and Expertise pillars
- Strengthen and diversify our West Midlands transport planning client portfolio, using their existing networks to identify, position for and secure new opportunities and extensions to existing work
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in the delivery of a varied project portfolio as a Project Manager or Project Director, aligned to client requirements
- Provide technical leadership in transport planning, on project work and more widely as part of our Expertise Practice Groups
- Demonstrate “Zero Harm” leadership in Health, Safety and Wellbeing
- Mentor and develop junior colleagues, actively sharing knowledge, supporting them in their career development and identifying relevant opportunities for them to progress
- Keep up to date with wider industry trends and best practice and showcase WSP’s work in areas that are of most interest to our clients, providing thought leadership and presenting at relevant events
Your Team
Our Birmingham Transport Planning Team sits within a wider national Mobility team, comprising over 600 people based in offices across England, Scotland and Wales. Our team works closely alongside our virtual teams in Net Zero, Future Mobility and Freight, as well as multidisciplinary colleagues in our development planning, highways and environment teams to name a few.
We deliver a wide range of transport planning projects for our clients, as well as an extensive portfolio of multi-disciplinary and cross-sector services, including (but not limited to): active travel solutions; public transport network planning; scheme development and appraisal; business case development and Government funding applications for all types of transport schemes; economic appraisal; carbon appraisal and management; consultation and engagement and transport strategy and policy development. You may have broad experience that spans across these areas, or you may be a specialist in one or more. We can help you to broaden your experience or deepen your specialist skill areas in line with your career aspirations.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to lead and develop our transport planning offer in the West Midlands, working alongside our local team leads in Modelling and Liveable Places to deliver a full service offer for our clients. The team has significant potential for growth and development, and we are looking for someone that has the vision and leadership to steer the team in line with our strategic growth objectives.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
- A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline (civil engineering, transport planning, geography or another relevant discipline)
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (desirable)
- Proven ability in leading and developing teams and individuals
- Commercial acumen and experience in the operational aspects of consultancy, including achieving financial KPIs, resourcing, recruitment, retention and quality control
- Proven track record in winning and successfully delivering public sector work
- Strong client relationships within the West Midlands and potentially more widely across the UK
- Technical knowledge, expertise and experience in transport planning, preferably across modes
- Strong track record in project management and financial control
- Passion for mentoring and developing talent
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise with others including public sector officials, members of the public and other senior colleagues
