Role Summary

About You

The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences is seeking to grow our team by appointing two Teaching Fellows in Physiotherapy to contribute to the delivery of our Physiotherapy programmes. Working with other members of the physiotherapy team and wider school, the post holder will teach, assess, and support students, playing an important role in the delivery of pre and post registration physiotherapy education in both campus based and placement education settings.

You will havea sound understanding of the UK healthcare context and a background of recent relevant specialist knowledge and experience of delivering person-centred and evidence-based physiotherapy practice. You will haveproven clinical skills demonstrated across one or more healthcare settings anda strong understanding of clinical reasoning and management strategies applicable to your area of contemporary physiotherapy and rehabilitation practice, which may be in, but is not limited to the musculoskeletal, neurological or cardiorespiratory context.

You may already have some experience working in physiotherapy education or be looking to move from a clinical setting into higher education to continue your own career development. We would consider job share and part-time options for excellent candidates who wish to retain a clinical post alongside a teaching role within the school.

About the role

Working within the physiotherapy programme teams, you will make a substantial contribution to the delivery of physiotherapy education on the School’s degree programmes with a focus on core clinical knowledge and skills to prepare students for practice in a range of clinical areas. You will be part of and may progress to lead module teams which plan, prepare and deliver excellent engaging and challenging teaching that inspires students and prepares them for current and future practice and a career in physiotherapy. You will be involved in assessing student performance across a range of assessments including practical exams, essays, presentations and portfolio assessments.

As well as working with larger groups in teaching, you will take on a pastoral role as a personal tutor, providing support and guidance to students individually and in small group tutorials for their academic development and being their link tutor whilst on clinical placement. You may also contribute to dissertation project supervision.

The post holder may also contribute to the delivery and administration of placement education including preparing students for placements, supporting the development of innovative models of placement education and university-based placement activity and maintenance of relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Alongside these student-focussed activities, you will be expected to contribute to the administration of education and work effectively as an interdisciplinary team member, having excellent communication and interpersonal skills.In addition, you will demonstrate academic citizenship, developing, and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.

You will be expected to maintain and update your own professional practice skills on a regular basis and have excellent organisational and time management skills. Main Duties

Education

  • Deliver teaching across courses at a range of levels to undergraduates, postgraduates and CPD students, so that the School’s teaching objectives are met.
  • Use of a range of appropriate approaches to learning and teaching including practical classes, seminars, lectures .
  • Plan and prepare your teaching in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
  • Use digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment.
  • Devise and deliver practical work to develop students’ practical physiotherapy skills.
  • Plan and review your own educational practice.
  • Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to marking and examining.
  • Frequently update own subject expertise.
  • Maintain your HCPC registration.
  • Contribute to the admissions process for physiotherapy programmes.
  • Act as a personal tutor to students.
  • Undertake personal professional development, including self-reflection on your teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance your teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to School teaching-related administration.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualified physiotherapist holding current HCPC registration.
  • At least 3 years experience in a relevant area of clinical practice (eg musculoskeletal, neurological or cardiorespiratory physiotherapy).
  • Understanding of health care delivery in the UK NHS context.
  • Experience of developing students use of research in evidence-based physiotherapy practice.
  • Experience of teaching physiotherapy in a relevant clinical or academic setting (eg supervising students, delivering in-service training etc).
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • A commitment to quality enhancement in practice.
  • Excellent organisation and time-management skills including ability to work to tight deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience of assessing and providing feedback on other people’s performance (eg supervising and assessing students on placement).
  • Skills in mentoring and providing support for others (eg supervising students, peer supervision, mentoring colleagues etc).
  • Ability to contribute to broader programme management and administration processes.
  • Evidence of supporting the implementing of new initiatives in health care.
  • Evidence of successful contribution to key stakeholder relationships e.g. clinical partners, service users etc.
  • Higher degree in a relevant subject or willingness to work towards this.
  • Ability to use data to monitor, evaluate and enhance quality of practice and identify equality and diversity issues.
  • Experience of supporting or developing interventions to address equality, diversity, and inclusivity issues.
