Job Description:

This role is ideal for graduates interested in gaining classroom experience and pursuing a career in teaching. As a Teaching Assistant - Trainee Teacher, your primary role is to support teachers and assist children with their educational and social development both inside and outside the classroom. In secondary schools, such assistants are often called learning support assistants.

Responsibilities include:
  • Preparing classrooms for lessons
  • Listening to children read, reading to them, or storytelling
  • Supporting children who need extra help to complete tasks
  • Assisting teachers with planning and record-keeping
  • Helping manage classroom behavior
  • Supervising group activities
  • Looking after children who are upset or have had accidents
  • Cleaning up after lessons
  • Assisting with outings and sports events
  • Participating in training sessions
  • Performing administrative tasks

Some assistants work one-to-one with pupils with specific needs, while others work in small groups. Schools may seek assistants with specialisms in literacy, numeracy, SEN, music, or arts. Bilingual candidates might work more with children whose first language isn't English. Experienced assistants may supervise classes in the absence of a teacher or lead lessons as higher-level teaching assistants (HLTAs).
