Job summary

Starfyn Recruitment is seeking an empathetic SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Lambeth. The role is long-term, full-time and based in school, supporting students aged 11 to 19 with diverse learning needs.

You will work 8.30am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, term-time only, with pay at £90 per day PAYE. Experience in SEN, autism or additional needs is desirable, though training and support are provided.

SEN Teaching Assistant

Lambeth

£90 per day PAYE

We are looking for empathetic, energetic and reliable people to join the Starfyn Education Family in a long-term, full-time SEN Teaching Assistant role!

One of our specialist SEN schools in Lambeth supports young people aged 11 to 19 with a range of learning difficulties and communication needs, with many students also having a diagnosis of Autism (ASD).

The school places a strong emphasis on helping students develop their independence, confidence, communication, emotional regulation and life skills, alongside their academic learning. Staff work closely together to create a positive, structured and supportive environment where every student is encouraged to make meaningful progress.

The school uses a variety of approaches to support students, including sensory regulation strategies, Total Communication, Makaton, Intensive Interaction, Zones of Regulation and practical life-skills activities.

The Role:

Employment Type – Agency (Either Long-Term, Temporary or Temporary to Permanent)

The Ideal Candidate will:

• To be considered for the role, the desirable candidate will have previous experience of working within a School, College, SEN Provision or similar setting. However, we will also consider candidates that have some of the following:
• Childcare experience – Through personal or professional experience.
• Special Needs experience – Through family, friends or professional environments.
• Experience supporting Autism, learning difficulties, communication needs or SEMH.
• Experience within care, supported living, youth work or similar support environments.
• Great interpersonal and communication skills with a genuine, caring attitude.
• A patient and resilient approach when supporting young people.
• An energetic attitude where you want to get involved wherever possible.
• A willingness to learn different communication and sensory strategies.
• Good general education levels in English and Maths.
• Flexibility with required working patterns.
• A genuine enthusiasm to help young people develop their independence and confidence.
• Teaching Assistant qualifications are preferred but not essential.

Your Main Duties:

• Offer support for the school's students before, during and after their lessons.
• Support students aged 11–19 with a range of additional learning and communication needs.
• Aid students with their understanding and participation in classroom activities.
• Work either on a 1:1 or small-group basis to support learning and development.
• Help students develop their communication, confidence, independence and life skills.
• Support students with sensory regulation and emotional well-being.
• Assist students who may require alternative methods of communication.
• Encourage positive behaviour and help students regulate their emotions.
• Work closely with Teachers, Teaching Assistants and other professionals within the school.
• Support practical and vocational learning activities where required.
• Help promote each student's love of learning and encourage positive engagement.
• Actively take part in team meetings and contribute to the wider school community.
• Always follow the regulations pertaining to Safeguarding and pupil welfare.
• Support students with individual needs and physical assistance where required, with appropriate training provided by the school.
• Inspire and engage young people with a wide range of additional learning needs.

As an agency worker you are only paid for the days you have worked. Therefore, you will not be paid during the school holidays.
