Job summary

Teaching Assistant – SEND School

Location: NG21

Start date: September 2026

Job Purpose

Monarch Education is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to support pupils aged 5-19 years within a specialist educational setting in the NG21 area. The school supports children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), providing a tailored and nurturing environment where pupils can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and other professionals to support pupils in accessing learning, developing communication skills, building confidence, and achieving their individual goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within the classroom and throughout the school day.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging and differentiated learning activities.
  • Promote the development of communication, social interaction, and independence skills.
  • Support pupils in accessing the curriculum and achieving individual learning targets.
  • Implement strategies outlined within Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation through consistent support and guidance.
  • Adapt resources and activities to meet the individual needs of pupils.
  • Support pupils during lessons, breaktimes, educational visits, and enrichment activities.
  • Work alongside speech and language therapists and other professionals to reinforce communication strategies.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils, families, and colleagues.
  • Monitor pupil progress and contribute to record-keeping and reporting processes.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies at all times.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
  • Experience working with children or young people in an educational, childcare, care, or support setting.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with SEND.
  • Understanding of the importance of communication and interaction in learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patient, caring, and resilient approach.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Right to work in the UK.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • Experience supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
  • Knowledge of communication strategies such as Makaton, PECS, or visual timetables.
  • Understanding of sensory needs and autism-friendly approaches.
  • Experience working within a SEND school or specialist provision.
  • Relevant Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Health & Social Care, or Education qualification.
  • Team Teach, Positive Handling, or First Aid training.
