Job Description:

Position: Graduate Teaching Assistant / Teaching Assistant

The Role:

Are you interested in gaining classroom experience or pursuing a career in teaching? As a teaching assistant, you will support teachers and help children with their educational and social development both inside and outside the classroom. In secondary schools, this role is often referred to as a learning support assistant.

Responsibilities include:
  • Preparing the classroom for lessons
  • Listening to children read, reading to them, or telling stories
  • Assisting children who need extra support to complete tasks
  • Helping teachers plan learning activities and maintain records
  • Supporting teachers in managing classroom behavior
  • Supervising group activities
  • Looking after children who are upset or have had accidents
  • Cleaning up materials and equipment after lessons
  • Assisting with outings and sports events
  • Participating in training sessions
  • Performing administrative tasks

Depending on experience and training, some assistants work one-to-one with pupils with specific needs or in small groups. Schools may also employ specialists in literacy, numeracy, SEN, music, or arts. Bilingual candidates might work more with children whose first language isn't English.

Advancement Opportunities:

Experienced and trained teaching assistants may supervise classes when teachers are absent or in training. Higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs) can lead lessons occasionally, although qualified teachers are always present in the classroom.

  • Salary: £75 to £91 daily rate
  • Hours: 08:30 to 15:30, school hours
