Job summary

Term Time Teachers are seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to support young people with SEN in an independent Edenbridge school. You will assist pupils with autism or SEMH, working across on-site settings or community venues to facilitate access to education and social participation.

You will collaborate with teachers, therapists and families, monitor progress, and tailor approaches to each child’s needs while maintaining safeguarding and professional standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEN in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of SEMH and autism-friendly approaches.
  • Ability to liaise with therapists, parents and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Observe, monitor and record pupil progress as directed, including wellbeing and safeguarding.
  • Ensure resources are available to support learning needs of all pupils.
  • Liaise with parents/carers with professional confidentiality and feedback.
  • Contribute to school aims and collaborate with colleagues and other professionals.
  • Attend meetings and undertake professional development as required.
  • Promote inclusive learning and ensure health and safety of pupils.

Job description

About the role: We are looking for an experienced Teaching Assistant to join an independent SEN school in Edenbridge supporting young people with an Autism or Mental Health diagnosis. You will support students in overcoming the challenges they face in accessing their education and the social world around them within their own homes or a nominated work space such as a local library. The aim is to support young people in reaching their potential through both emotional, practical and educational support, whilst tailoring our approach for each individual’s specific needs. Successful Teaching Assistant will be passionate about the job with an ability to reach out to students and create a relationship of mutual trust. They will know how to engage students, inspiring them with a desire to learn whilst having a sound knowledge of SEMH.

The goal is: To provide students with the confidence and resilience to meet the challenges that act as barriers to their education and impact upon successful outcomes in their everyday lives.

  • Observe, monitor and record the progress of pupils both using the appropriate format as advised by the teacher including pupil learning, behaviour management, wellbeing, child protection etc (including liaising with therapists) as directed in order to support the teacher deliver the specific learning programmes set for each child.
  • Ensure resources are available to facilitate the learning needs of all pupils.
  • Liaise with parents/carers as required, maintaining professional, confidential dialogue with due regard to school policy and practice and feedback as necessary.
  • Contribute to the overall work/aims of the school and appreciate and support the role of colleagues and other professionals to enable the school fulfil its development plans etc.
  • Undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings (within contracted hours) as required to ensure own professional development. Attend training outside of contracted hours with advanced notice and in negotiation.
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Ensure health and safety and good behaviour of pupils (including off‑site activities such as trips, etc.). Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils’ wellbeing.
  • Supervise and have responsibility for the safety of pupils in social times, as well as model appropriate play and organise learning activities.
  • Promote positive behaviour effectively and consistently to raise self‑esteem and promote positive social interactions and the respect for other people’s views.
  • Acquire the appropriate skills, qualifications and/or experience required for the role, with the support from the school.
