Job summary

Compass Community School Mountfields Park in Loughborough is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to support pupils with SEMH and complex needs. You will work 1:1 or in small groups, assist learning activities and contribute to a safe, therapeutic classroom environment.

Joining our team means engaging in extensive therapeutic training, collaborating with teaching staff, and helping pupils access the curriculum with patience, creativity and resilience in a supportive, nationwide organisation.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting children with SEMH and complex needs.
  • Ability to work 1:1 or in small groups.

Responsibilities

  • Support teaching and learning activities.
  • Work with children 1:1 or in small groups.
  • Manage classroom resources and displays.
  • Take children on educational trips and visits.
  • Have lunch with children who struggle socially.
  • Keep children safe with effective behaviour management.
  • Create, play and teach games to develop social skills.
  • Create amazing displays to support learning environments.
  • Participate in therapeutic training sessions and reflections.

Compass Community School Mountfields Park is an independent specialist day school providing high-quality, therapeutic and child-centred education to boys and girls from 7 to 17 years of age in Loughborough. Our children come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Many will also have other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) such as Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties.The work we do is both varied and challenging and, as a trauma and attachment informed organisation, all staff are provided with extensive therapeutic training and support.Our closely triangulated approach places the childat the centre of decision making, ensuring that education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authority teams and, most importantly, our students can work together to secure outstanding outcomes for all.The Role Teaching Assistants at our school know that no two days are the same and that no two children are the same either. Our children require very special adults who can support children with complex and challenging behaviours.TAs in our schools will understand that our children require lots of attention, just the right sort of communication, consistency and flexibility in equal measure, and a non-judgemental approach. They need to be resilient, persistent and solution focussed to meet the needs of our pupils and to do so they need to wear a lot of hats and be prepared to change them at a moment’s notice!Our Teaching Assistants willSupport teaching and learning Work with children 1:1 or delivering sessions with small groups of studentsManage classroom resourcesTake children on educational trips and visitsHave their lunch with children who struggle sociallyHave a good basic understanding or English and MathsKeep children safe when they are experiencing heightened behaviours with strong behaviour management skills and excellent communicationCreate, play and teach games to pupils to develop their social skills or further learningCreate amazing displays which support teaching and create an exceptional learning environmentCelebrate successParticipate in therapeutic training sessions or reflecting on difficult periodsOur TAs are highly valued members of our team.
