Job description

Salary Actual salary £23,250 - £26,353 per annum

One Year Fixed Term (September 2025 – end of August 2026)
Actual Salary: £23,250 - £26,353 per annum, dependent on experience, skills and qualifications
Hours: Full time, 08:30 – 17:00 (40 hours per week with an unpaid break) with flexibility to work beyond 17:00 to support with fixtures.
Working Weeks: 41 weeks of the year (term time including INSET days, plus an additional 6 weeks supporting holiday club).

The Role

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and confident Teaching & Sports Assistant, who is passionate about supporting children both in the classroom, under the direction of a form teacher and during sports lessons, as part of the Sports & PE department.

Approximately half of your time will be spent working closely with your form teacher (supporting a class of children aged 4 - 7 years) and the remainder of your time will be working under the direction of the Director of Sports and Head of PE, supporting with the delivery of all aspects of the PE and games curriculum, including assisting with lessons; clubs, practices and fixtures for Year 1 to 8 pupils.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about education, sports and sports coaching, looking to gain relevant experience either prior or post completing higher education. The post would be particularly appropriate for a candidate who is contemplating a career in an education setting or as a sports coach.

With a positive and flexible disposition and nurturing approach to supporting children’s learning across the curriculum, the successful candidate will be child focused, professional and approachable with a strong focus on team work and a willingness to get involved and support the wider school as required.

In addition to experienced candidates, we are open to considering applicants with limited work experience, as long as they can demonstrate some experience of having either worked or volunteered with younger children and due to the sports requirement, previous experience of supporting children with sports is essential.

Safeguarding knowledge, the ability to follow instructions, and effective communication with both children and colleagues are all essential and will be assessed during interview.

The key responsibilities of the Teaching & Sports Assistant include, but are not limited to:

• Work closely and under the direction of the both their Class Teacher and the Sports department, to support with the delivery of high standard education provision.
• Supervise children at various times throughout the day in and outside the classroom.
• Work with small groups and individual children as directed by the Class Teacher.
• To work under the direction of the Director of Sport and Head of PE and follow their instruction in relation to assisting with the planning and delivery of games / PE lessons and creating an engaging and positive sports environment.
• To assist with lunchtime activities and accompany teaching staff on off-site fixtures, trips and activities.
• Ensure the positive behaviour of pupils at all times, promote the good name of the school and act as a role model, setting high expectations in accordance with school policies and procedures.
• To establish and promote positive productive relationships with pupils and promote the inclusion of all pupils.
• To support with the Aftercare and Holiday Club provisions as directed and school events when required.

The Person

The key skills and qualities of the role are:

• An enthusiasm for sports with an encouraging and motivational approach to learning
• Able to demonstrate a genuine passion for sports and sporting activities with an interest in sports coaching
• Possess excellent communication skills with an ability to establish rapport with pupils, parents and colleagues
• A positive, flexible and supportive team member
• A willingness to support and engage in the whole life of the School
• GCSE or equivalent English and Mathematics Grade C or above.
• A relevant childcare related qualification would be advantageous, but is not essential
• Experience of working with children in the 4-7 age range (this may include volunteering)
• Knowledge and understanding of the EYFS and Key Stage 1 curriculum.
• A good knowledge of child development and learning processes including barriers to learning.
• In possession of a valid Paediatric First Aid qualification or willingness to obtain via the School
• Good ICT skills
• Knowledge of the statutory requirements of legislation concerning Safeguarding, Child Protection, Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety and inclusion.
