JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS

(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987

Regulation 5

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  • (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) if employed by a board on terms not assigning them to a specific school, under the reasonable direction of the board and of the principal of any school where they may be required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

  • (a) Teachers (not principals) shall perform, according to reasonable directions from the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned.
  • (b) Teachers employed under paragraph 1(b) shall perform duties as directed by the board or the principal of the school where they work.

3. Responsibilities include:

  1. Planning: Developing courses and lessons, teaching, assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development.
  2. General: Promoting pupils' progress and well-being, providing advice, communicating with parents and external bodies, and participating in meetings.
  3. Assessment/Reporting: Contributing to assessments, reports, and references for pupils.
  4. Staff Development: Participating in staff development schemes, reviewing teaching methods, and engaging in professional development.
  5. Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintaining order, safeguarding health and participating in relevant meetings.
  6. Public Examinations: Preparing pupils, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams.
  7. Management Activities: Contributing to staff appointments, managing work, and participating in curriculum and pastoral activities.
  8. Hours of Work: Availability for 195 days/year, with specific hours and breaks as specified.
  9. Staff Cover: Supervising pupils during teacher absence, with conditions based on school size.
