JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations
(Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5
- Exercise of general professional duties
- A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required, under the reasonable direction of the principal or, if employed by a board without a specific school assignment, under the board's and principal's direction.
- Exercise of particular duties
- Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board, including planning, teaching, assessment, and reporting, as well as participating in meetings.
Specific Responsibilities
- Planning
- Developing courses and lessons, teaching students, and assessing their development.
- General
- Promoting student progress, providing guidance, maintaining records, communicating with parents and external bodies, and participating in meetings.
- Assessment/Reporting
- Contributing to assessments, reports, and references for pupils.
- Staff Development
- Participating in staff development, reviewing teaching methods, and engaging in professional training.
- Discipline/Health and Safety
- Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety of pupils.
- Public Examinations
- Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, and supervising during examinations.
- Management Activities/Administration
- Contributing to staff recruitment, managing colleagues, and participating in curriculum and pastoral management.
- Work Schedule
- Availability for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as specified, including supervision and attendance responsibilities.
- Staff Cover
- Providing cover for absent teachers as specified, with conditions based on school size and policies.

Essential Criteria
- Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification, degree Level 6 in Science.
- Experience: At least 6 months teaching Science at KS3 & KS4, using diverse strategies and digital media.
- Registration: Must be registered with GTCNI before starting.
Additional Criteria (to be assessed during interview)
- Knowledge of NI Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND, IT, assessment methods.
- Skills in classroom management, inclusivity, teamwork, communication, and school ethos alignment.
Desirable Criteria
- Over 1 year's experience teaching A-level Science or related subjects, including extracurricular activities.
Criminal Background Disclosure
Post involves regulated activity; an Enhanced Disclosure will be required, with costs borne by the applicant.
