JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS

(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  1. If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  2. If employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may be required to work.
2) Exercise of particular duties

Teachers shall perform, in accordance with directions from the principal or the board, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned to them.

3. Main Responsibilities

Planning:

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development, progress, and attainment.

General:

  • Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils.
  • Providing advice and guidance on educational, social matters, and future careers.
  • Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs.
  • Communicating with parents and outside bodies.
  • Participating in meetings related to these activities.

Assessment/Reporting:

Providing assessments, reports, and references for pupils, ensuring confidentiality where necessary.

Staff Development:

  • Participating in staff development and performance reviews.
  • Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes.
  • Advising on course development, teaching materials, and assessment methods.

Discipline/Health and Safety:

  • Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety.
  • Participating in curriculum, administrative, and pastoral meetings.

Public Examinations:

Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, and supervising during exams.

Management and Administration:

  • Contributing to staff appointments and development.
  • Managing work of other teachers and participating in curriculum and pastoral activities.
  • Handling administrative tasks and supervising pupils.

Working Hours and Days:

  • Available for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as specified.

Staff Cover:

Providing cover for absent teachers within specified conditions.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Knowledge: Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND, assessment, and IT systems.
  • Skills: Effective classroom management, inclusive teaching, collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability.
  • Values: Reflecting school ethos and values.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
  • Experience: Teaching a composite class, SEN, Learning Through Play, phonics, extracurricular activities, monitoring progress.
