JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional duties and terms

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987 – Schedule 3 Regulation 5

  1. 1) Exercise of general professional duties – A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including working under the reasonable direction of the principal and, where applicable, under the direction of the board and the principal of any school where the teacher is required to work.
  2. 2) Exercise of particular duties – A teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions by the principal or board, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned.
  3. 3) Planning – Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to pupils’ educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  4. 4) General – Promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide advice and guidance; make records and reports; communicate with parents and external bodies; participate in meetings.
  5. 5) Assessment/Reporting – Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments and reports on pupils, as appropriate.
  6. 6) Staff Development/Professional Development – Participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods; engage in further training; develop courses, materials, and pastoral arrangements in collaboration with the principal and other teachers.
  7. 7) Discipline/Health and Safety – Maintain order and safety of pupils; participate in curriculum, administration, and pastoral meetings.
  8. 8) Public Examinations – Assist in preparing pupils for public examinations; record and report assessments; supervise pupils during examinations.
  9. 9) Review and Development of Management/Administration – Contribute to selecting and developing other teachers; coordinate or manage work of teachers; participate in curriculum, organisational and pastoral activities; undertake administrative tasks; supervise staff and manage equipment and materials; monitor attendance and assemblies as required.
  10. 10) Number of days/hours – Availability and duties related to teaching days, hours, breaks and year definitions; compliance with the contract and school policies.
  11. 11) Staff cover – Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, within the constraints described.
  12. 12) General note – The job description is subject to review and may be adjusted; other duties of a similar nature may be assigned; promote good relations and equality in line with legislation.

Qualifications/Professional Membership

Hold a teaching qualification that meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland. Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach General Subjects AND experience of working with pupils with Special Educational Needs.

Experience

Minimum of 3 months experience (including teaching practice) of assisting pupils with Special Educational Needs; demonstrable experience using a range of effective classroom approaches to support and challenge pupils of all abilities, including those with SEN.

Other

Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post; Pre-employment Check.

Section 2 – Essential criteria

The following are additional essential criteria to be measured during interview/selection.

Knowledge

Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy/practice; SEND Code of Practice and implications; current teaching strategies to meet SEN needs; assessment methods to diagnose, plan for learning and measure progress; approaches to positive behaviour for learning (e.g., Restorative Practice); IT systems and digital classroom tools.

Skills/Abilities

Effective teaching and classroom management; ability to provide an inclusive learning environment; initiative, problem-solving, flexibility; ongoing professional development; teamwork and collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; motivation and self-management.

Section 3 – Desirable criteria

Desirable criteria may be used to determine a manageable pool of candidates and applied in order. Demonstrable experience of monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting and intervention.
