JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher

This job description outlines the duties and responsibilities of a teacher in accordance with the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5.

General Professional Duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required, under the reasonable direction of the principal or the employing board, including:

  • Exercise of general duties, including teaching and assessment.
  • Exercise of particular duties as assigned by the principal or the board.
Specific Responsibilities
  1. Planning
  2. Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  3. Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  4. Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupil development.

  2. Promoting pupils' progress and well-being.
  3. Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, including future careers.
  4. Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs.
  5. Communicating with parents and external bodies.
  6. Participating in relevant meetings.
Assessment and Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils, ensuring confidentiality.

Staff Development

Participating in staff development schemes, reviewing teaching methods, and engaging in professional training.

Discipline and Health & Safety

Maintaining discipline, safeguarding health and safety, and participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.

Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, and supervising during exams.

Management and Administration

Contributing to staff recruitment, managing other teachers' work, and participating in curriculum and organizational development.

Working Hours

Full-time teachers shall be available for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as outlined, including breaks and supervision duties.

Staff Cover

Supervising pupils in the absence of their teachers, subject to school size and policies.
