JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

This post has a Teaching Allowance attached on a pro rata basis for the responsibility for HOD

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  • (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may be required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

(a) A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, such duties as may be assigned.

(b) Teachers not assigned to a specific school shall perform duties as directed by the board or the principal of any school they are required to work in.

3. Planning

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development and progress.

4. General

  • Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils.
  • Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters.
  • Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs.
  • Communicating with parents and external bodies.
  • Participating in meetings related to these activities.

5. Assessment/Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references for pupils, while maintaining professional integrity.

6. Staff Development/Professional Development

  • Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
  • Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes.
  • Advising on course and material development.

7. Discipline/Health and Safety

  • Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety.
  • Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.

8. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, and supervising during exams.

9. Management and Administration

  • Contributing to staff recruitment and development.
  • Managing or coordinating other teachers' work.
  • Participating in curriculum and organizational development.
  • Handling administrative tasks, including support staff management and resource allocation.

10. Working Hours

  • Available for 195 days/year, with up to 190 days involving classroom teaching.
  • Work hours and breaks as specified, with limitations on weekly teaching hours.

11. Staff Cover

Supervising pupils in absence of their teacher, with specific conditions based on school size.
