JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher

Based on the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, the duties include:

  1. Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required, under the reasonable direction of the principal or the employing board, including:

  • Teaching in a school under the principal’s direction
  • Being employed by a board without a fixed school assignment, under the board’s direction and that of the principal of any school where required
  1. Exercise of particular duties

Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the employing board, including:

  • Teaching and lesson planning
  • Assessing and reporting on pupils’ development and progress
Key Responsibilities
  1. Planning
  • Designing and preparing courses and lessons
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting pupil progress
  1. General
  • Promoting pupils’ progress and well-being
  • Providing advice on educational and social matters
  • Maintaining records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs
  • Communicating with parents and external bodies

  1. Assessment/Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils, ensuring confidentiality.

  1. Staff Development/Professional Development
  • Participating in staff development schemes
  • Reviewing and improving teaching methods
  • Contributing to curriculum and pastoral development
  1. Discipline/Health and Safety
  • Maintaining good order and discipline
  • Safeguarding pupils’ health and safety
  1. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, and supervising during exams.

  1. Management Activities/Administration
  • Contributing to staff recruitment and development
  • Managing the work of other teachers
  • Participating in curriculum and organizational management
  1. Working Hours

Full-time teachers are expected to work 195 days per year, with specific hours and duties as specified, including breaks and supervision duties.

  1. Staff Cover

Covering for absent colleagues as specified, depending on school size and policies.

Person Specification

Applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification and registration with GTCNI
  • Experience: Teaching KS3 Maths with positive outcomes; teaching KS4 Maths is desirable
  • Knowledge: Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND, assessment methods, IT skills
  • Skills: Effective classroom management, inclusive teaching, teamwork, communication
