Christ’s Hospital is seeking a well-qualified graduate to teach Mathematics to IGCSE and A Level in our large co-educational boarding school.
While a PGCE is not essential, we welcome colleagues with enthusiasm for mathematics and a flair for innovative teaching, including Further Mathematics; the department has a long tradition and offers opportunities to inspire pupils both inside and outside the classroom.
This post offers the opportunity to teach Mathematics to IGCSE and A Level. Although not essential, we would be particularly interested in colleagues who can teach Further Mathematics or other related subjects. As an independent school, a PGCE is not necessary for teaching at Christ’s Hospital, and we would consider recent graduates who are interested in the profession or highly qualified professionals who are considering a career change.
The successful applicant will be a well-qualified and capable graduate with an enthusiasm for the teaching of Mathematics in a large co-educational boarding school. Innovation, flair, and vision are highly valued, as is the ability to inspire pupils both inside and outside the classroom.
The Royal Mathematical School (RMS) was founded at Christ’s Hospital 350 years ago and, as part of the school, has been transforming the lives of its students for generations. It was established in 1673 by King Charles ll and went on to be shaped by some of the world’s foremost intellectuals, including Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Christopher Wren. The vast painting by Antonio Verrio hanging in the school’s Dining Hall commemorates the founding of the department.
Mathematics is a key subject in the curriculum at CH. Students follow a foundation mathematics course in 2nd and 3rd form (Year 7 and 8) and from Little Erasmus (Year 9) and thereafter all students are taught the Higher Edexcel IGCSE course. This provides a good platform for A Level and beyond. Maths groups are set by ability from the Second Form (Year 7) to Greater Erasmus (Year 11). Class sizes average 22 in all compulsory mathematics sets, allowing for smaller groups to cater for the less able mathematicians.
The current A Level course is the Edexcel specification, and both maths and further maths are very popular (over 60% of 6th form students taking maths). A Level teaching is spread throughout the department with two teachers taking the same set for different strands of the syllabus (mechanics and statistics). Results are good: last year over 63% of all maths grades were A* to B; 75% of further maths grades were A* to B. We also offer the Extended Project Qualification in mathematics and computer science, and students are assisted with their preparation for MAT or STEP exams.
