Overview
Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, high performing and enthusiastic individual to the full-time post of Teacher of History. The History & Politics Department is lively, dynamic and progressive in its approaches to delivering the specification and topics offered. The department currently teaches the AQA A level History specification, with around 300 students. The successful candidate will teach topics including: The Cold War, c1945-1991; The Tudors: England, 1485-1603; and the Coursework Historical Investigation – Civil Rights in the US, 1865-1980. The department offers extra-curricular opportunities (e.g., trips to Berlin and Westminster, visits by MPs and academic speakers) and encourages CPD. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the extra-curricular offer. Applications from recently qualified teachers and ECTs are welcome.
Main duties
- To provide high quality learning, teaching and assessment in accordance with the duties of a main scale teacher and in accordance with the College's policies
- To have regard to the principles and values expressed in the College's Mission Statement
- To monitor and track each learner's achievement according to value added criteria, assessment and attendance to ensure each learner fulfils their potential
- To contribute to the development of high-quality resources, schemes of work and teaching, learning and assessment resources and strategies
- To contribute to the further development of the subject through enrichment and study trips to maximise students’ engagement
- To contribute to the planning activities of the department, reflecting the needs of the students and the aims of the College
- To embrace a varied range of teaching and learning styles appropriate to the post-16 learner, developing a team culture and integrating ILT/online platforms
- To work as part of a team and contribute to effective working relations
- To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in accordance with the duties of a main scale teacher
- To undertake the assessment of students' work in accordance with the College's assessment policy
Quality Assurance and Professional Development
- To actively participate in staff development activities
- To participate in the College appraisal system
- To contribute to target setting within the department and work towards achievement
- To develop effective teaching and learning styles
- To contribute to and participate in the College's lesson observation procedures
- To maintain accurate and up-to-date information concerning students and their progress
- To contribute to the College's liaison and information events (e.g., Open Mornings and Parents\' Consultations)
- To communicate with parents when appropriate, including report writing and attendance at Parents\' Consultations
Other

- To liaise with partner schools, higher education, industry, examination boards and other external bodies as appropriate
- To maximise the intake of History students in liaison with partner schools

- To undertake any other duties reasonably assigned by the Principal
Personal and Professional Requirements
- A good honours degree in History or a relevant subject
- Postgraduate Certificate of Education or equivalent (Secondary or Further Education)
- Ability to teach History at Advanced Level
- Successful experience of teaching A Level History
- Evidence of recent outstanding results at A level, Level 3 and/or GCSE
- Excellent classroom teacher of History
- Awareness of current developments in History
- Ability to motivate students and develop strategies to stretch the more able
- Positive, proactive attitude with flexible approach
- Ability to set and achieve high standards for themselves and students
- Commitment to a student-centered learning approach
- Ability to manage student progress and complete relevant documentation
- ICT skills to enhance teaching and learning
- Evidence of effective teaching and learning strategies including differentiation
- Creative and imaginative approach to developing resources
- Willingness to undertake further personal/professional development
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting welfare of young people
- Alignment with Catholic ethos of the college
Desirable
- Knowledge/experience of the A level Politics syllabus
- Experience of working in a successful department
- Knowledge of developments in the post-16 sector
