PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987

Regulation 5

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  • (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may be required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

(a) A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, such duties as may be assigned.

(b) A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the board or the principal of any school where he/she may work, such duties as assigned.

3. Planning

  • 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  • 1.2 Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
  • 1.3 Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development, progress, and attainment.

4. General

  • 2.1 Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils;
  • 2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
  • 2.3 Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
  • 2.4 Communicating with parents;
  • 2.5 Collaborating with external persons or bodies;
  • 2.6 Participating in meetings related to the above.

5. Assessment/Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils, without compromising own position.

6. Staff Development/Professional Development

  • 4.1 Participating in staff development schemes;
  • 4.2 Reviewing teaching methods and participating in training;
  • 4.3 Advising on course development, teaching materials, and assessment methods.

7. Discipline/Health and Safety

  • 5.1 Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety;
  • 5.2 Participating in school meetings related to curriculum, administration, or pastoral arrangements.

8. Public Examinations

Participating in exam arrangements, assessments, and supervision.

9. Management Activities/Administration

  • 7.1 Contributing to staff appointment and development, managing work of other teachers, and participating in curriculum and pastoral management;
  • 7.2 Handling administrative tasks, support staff supervision, equipment management, and attendance.

10. Working Days/Hours

  • 8.1 Full-time teachers work 195 days/year, with up to 190 days involving teaching;
  • 8.2 Work hours and duties are specified by the principal or employing authority;
  • 8.3 Teaching hours are limited weekly (e.g., 25 hours in primary).

11. Staff Cover

Supervising and teaching pupils when teachers are absent, with specific provisions based on school size and teacher availability.
