Teacher of Drama - Fixed Term to 26/06/2026
Portobello High School

Salary: £33,594 - £50,589 (pro-rata for part-time)
Hours: 22.91 per week

Portobello High School is a six year comprehensive based in the East of Edinburgh with a school roll of over 1400 young people, drawn mainly from five associate primary schools - Brunstane, Duddingston, Parsons Green, Royal High and Towerbank.

In October 2016 the school moved into a superb new building on Milton Road close to rail, bus and road links. The school has well-established links with its community and the proximity of Edinburgh College, four Universities and all that the Scotland's capital city has to offer gives scope for the development of further partnerships. Significant investment has been made in digital technology to support effective learning and all staff and all young people have their own iPad. This is enhanced by 80 teaching screens connected to Apple TV throughout.

Our improvement plan reflects local CEC and national priorities. There are a wide range of quality opportunities for staff to engage in high quality professional learning. We are firmly committed to raising attainment and promoting achievement and the school offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. The school places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of building positive relationships with young people and has introduced a number of innovative approaches to strengthen these. Our #AchievingTogether strategy underpins all we do.

This post represents a great opportunity for the right person to join a large staff team and work in a truly comprehensive setting. In the BGE Drama classes are taught weekly in practical sets of no more than 20 pupils. This year we are introducing a School of Drama, Performance and Production' which all S1 & S2 pupils can opt into, and they will receive an extra 2 periods of Drama each week.

We receive positive uptake for elective SQA courses across all levels from National 5 to Advanced Higher and have an extremely high pass rate at all levels. The department is well resourced and positioned right at the heart of the school and plays a key part in the broader life of the school and its wider community. Our current Advanced class are taking their devised piece to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, which is something we hope to embed. The successful candidate will be a creative, dynamic and forward-thinking person and will join an experienced and enthusiastic team.

For further information about the post please contact Greg McDowell, Headteacher Tel. No. 0131 669 2324 or email admin@portobello.edin.sch.uk

Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. Anunconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.
