About the Department

Design and Technology is a thriving and popular subject at Habs, taught by a team of five specialist teachers and supported by a full-time technician. The subject is delivered from our outstanding Design Centre, which includes:

  • Three large workshops and two multi-purpose rooms.
  • Extensive access to departmental laptops and software.
  • Cutting-edge facilities including a waterjet cutter, CNC mill, four laser cutters, a CNC router, and eight 3D printers.
  • Well-equipped areas for CAD, electronics, and engineering.

Pupils enjoy a wide-ranging and hands-on curriculum, and many go on to compete in national competitions such as VEX Robotics, F1 in Schools, and Greenpower Racing. The department also supports several students each year in gaining Arkwright Scholarships.

Curriculum

The Design and Technology curriculum is broad, modern and ambitious:

  • In Years 7 and 8, students engage with topics including sustainability, robotics, inclusive design, and mechanics.
  • In Year 9, pupils build strong foundations for the OCR GCSE Design and Technology course.
  • At A Level, we offer pathways in Product Design and Design Engineering, both of which are highly subscribed.

The department places a strong emphasis on technical skills, creative thinking, and iterative design processes. Staff work collaboratively to share resources and continually refine the curriculum.
