Job description
Overview

Teacher of Adventure Education – Myddelton College
Location: Denbigh, North Wales
Contract: 0.7 (3 days per week) + 6 flexible weekend days per term. Start Date: As soon as possible

About Us Myddelton College is a co-educational day and boarding school set in 37 acres of historic parkland in Denbigh, North Wales. Our campus is a haven for flora and fauna, creating a unique environment for learning and adventure. Beyond the gates, you\'ll find Snowdonia, the Clwydian Range, rivers, and rugged coastlines—an outdoor educator\'s dream. Our Outdoor & Adventure Education (OAE) programme is at the heart of school life, recognised by Estyn as a model of meaningful adventure education. We deliver authentic, life-changing experiences that shape confident, resilient, and independent young people.

Why This Role Is Different This is not a typical teaching job. It\'s a role that blends the expectations of a classroom teacher with those of an outdoor professional. You\'ll be planning lessons, marking work, and contributing to academic progress—while also leading pupils through mountains, rivers, and forests. It requires adaptability, creativity, and a passion for both education and adventure. You\'ll need to be comfortable switching between environments: one day you might be teaching GCSE theory in a classroom, the next you\'re leading a canoe journey or a mountain day. This dual responsibility is demanding, but it\'s also what makes the role so rewarding.

Why Join Us

  • An Inspiring Setting: Teach in a biodiverse campus and explore some of the UK\'s most iconic landscapes.
  • Professional Growth: We expect and support staff to maintain their outdoor qualifications and pursue personal adventures—because we are role models for our pupils.
  • Long-Term Impact: Work with the same pupils for 17 days per year over multiple years, building deep and meaningful relationships.
  • A Culture of Flexibility: We understand that adventure education doesn\'t fit neatly into a timetable. Early starts, occasional evenings, and weekend commitments are part of the rhythm of this role.

About the Role

  • Deliver Learning Through The Outdoors (LTTO) lessons on and off-site, using activities such as climbing, canoeing, bushcraft, and mountaineering.
  • Lead a year group curriculum (Years 7-9), including planning and overnight camps.
  • Support GCSE and A-Level equivalent courses, creating resources, delivering practical sessions, and assessing coursework.
  • Assist with Prep School provision when required.
  • Support Duke of Edinburgh programmes, trips, and expeditions.
  • Contribute to risk management and equipment maintenance.

Flexibility is key

  • On practical activity days, OAE staff typically start at 8:00 a.m. to prepare for the day.
  • At times, you will cover lessons outside your subject area.
  • Evening and weekend commitments (e.g., open days, parents\' evenings, school events) are part of the role.
  • Some planning, marking, and resource creation will be expected during evenings, weekends, and school holidays.

What We\'re Looking For

  • Passionate about outdoor education and youth development.
  • Qualified and current with relevant NGB awards.
  • Adaptable and willing to teach across age ranges, including Prep School.
  • Committed to personal and professional development, with a thirst for adventure.
  • Experienced in leading outdoor activities and working in educational settings.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary package.
  • PPE kit and equipment provided.
  • CPD opportunities and support for further qualifications.
  • A dynamic, supportive team in a truly unique environment.
