JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary. REPORTS TO: Principal.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS
  • Professional duties of a teacher in accordance with the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3 Regulation 5.
  • Exercise of general professional duties: work under the reasonable direction of the principal or under the board’s direction when assigned to a school by the board.
  • Exercise of particular duties: perform such duties as reasonably directed by the principal, board, or school to which you are assigned.
  • Planning and preparation of courses and lessons; teaching to meet pupils’ educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development and attainment.
  • General duties: promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide guidance on educational and social matters and future careers; maintain records; communicate with parents and external bodies as approved; participate in meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting: contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for individual pupils and groups.
  • Staff Development/Professional Development: participate in staff development schemes and performance review; review teaching methods; assist with course development, materials, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety: maintain order and safeguard pupils; participate in curriculum and administrative meetings; assist with safety on and off school premises.
  • Public Examinations: assist in preparation, assessment, reporting and supervision for public examinations.
  • Management/Administration: contribute to staff appointments and development; coordinate or manage other teachers; participate in curriculum and pastoral functions; undertake administrative tasks and equipment management.
  • Number of days/hours of work: obligations regarding days, hours, breaks, and related terms; year defined as 12 months from 31 July; week as 7 days starting on Sunday.
  • Staff cover: provide cover for absent colleagues under specified conditions.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

NOTES TO JOB APPLICANTS

SECTION 1 — ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

These criteria will be measured at shortlisting and may be explored further during interview. Include how you meet them on the application form.

  • Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland by the closing date for completed applications.
  • Experience: Demonstrate a minimum of four years’ teaching experience with evidence of leading a team and of ICT and assessment experience enabling rapid development of school initiatives.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrable knowledge of the Northern Ireland Primary Curriculum at Key Stage 2; knowledge of ICT systems (digital classroom tools/media, My School C2K, tablets, Seesaw, Google Classroom); knowledge of digital assessment methods; proficiency with data tools such as Testwise/SIMS.
  • Other: Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

SECTION 2 — ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (INTERVIEW/SELECTION)

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of current assessment methods; safeguarding and child protection policy/practice; SEND Code of Practice.
  • Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents and community; guidance and staff development; leadership to motivate and develop staff; monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting and intervention.
  • Values Orientation: Evidence of alignment with the School’s values/ethos.

SECTION 3 — DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Desirable criteria may be used to refine the shortlist; include evidence on your application.
  • Examples include leading/contributing to staff training, contributing to after-school programmes, managing school website/app and social media, ICT/Assessment management in primary settings, and musical support if applicable.

DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines work with children/young people as “regulated activity.” If appointed to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be undertaken.
