The role

Aberystwyth University is looking to appoint a Teacher in Chinese (in-person) to teach on Aberystwyth University’s Lifelong Learning courses.

This is an hourly paid position and the successful candidate will be required to teach classes between one and four evenings per week during term time. Lessons may take place during days, evenings and weekends. All the courses are subject to minimum student enrolments.

The successful candidate will have experience of teaching Chinese and understand the needs of adult learners and the need for continuous professional development by teachers. The successful candidate will undertake teaching, course promotion, assessment and administration. Classes will be in-person.

Appointments are normally made within 4 - 8 weeks of the closing date.

What you’ll do

This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.

  • To maximise recruitment to LLL courses by publicising and promoting their own module(s) and by participating in general marketing activities and events;
  • To travel and transport teaching materials to class locations (This is not applicable if the classes are online)
  • To devise and implement an appropriate student learning experience in line with LLL and University quality assurance guidelines;
  • When necessary, to prepare the online learning environment in advance of teaching (subject specific);
  • To provide appropriate pastoral support for students;
  • To complete risk assessment documentation (when appropriate);
  • To contact the relevant coordinators in relation to class enrolments;
  • To undertake administrative work associated with classes, including completing class register, enrolment feedback and evaluation forms etc. in accordance with LLL requirements and within stated timescales;
  • To undertake all existing and new Quality Assurance processes associated with the modules and study schemes e.g. preparing assessment tasks, marking, giving written & verbal feedback and submitting all of the above for moderation within the given timescales;
  • To be involved in curriculum development;
  • To attend induction and staff training events for tutors;
  • To undertake in-house training;
  • To attend staff meetings and professional development sessions;
  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills required:

  • A degree, equivalent level qualification, or significant relevant experience / specialism (employment) in the subject area.
  • A teaching qualification or substantial teaching experience for adults.
  • Experience of class planning, delivering and assessing post-16 teaching, or training sessions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use IT with confidence, including the Internet, e- mail, social media and presentation packages for teaching, marketing and administrative purposes;
  • Evidence of excellent organisational and administrative skills;
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with students of different ages and backgrounds;
  • Have the ability to travel to and transport teaching materials to class locations; (this is not applicable if the classes are online)
  • Available for week-end and evening teaching;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • To live within advertised geographical area of post. (this is not applicable if the classes are online)
  • An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
  • A postgraduate qualification in relevant subject area.
  • Experience of innovative learning and teaching methods
  • Have a knowledge of risk assessments and safety in the work place
  • Ability to offer pastoral support to students.
  • Evidence of own continuing professional development, with a focus on improving quality by developing innovative courses, teaching and assessment methods;
  • Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B1.*
