Job Description:

Our client, a highly respected Managing General Agent operating in the transactional risk space, is looking to appoint a Tax Underwriter to join its established liability underwriting team. This is a unique opportunity for a junior tax lawyer or tax professional from practice to transition into the insurance sector, applying their technical expertise in a fast-paced, commercially focused environment.

About the Business

The firm is a recognised leader in underwriting complex M&A and tax-related risks, providing bespoke insurance solutions across a diverse range of industries and jurisdictions. With an impressive track record of hiring from top law and accountancy firms, they offer a collaborative and intellectually engaging platform for individuals seeking to move away from traditional advisory roles.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will work as part of a specialist team responsible for assessing and underwriting known tax exposures arising from transactions, restructurings, or ongoing disputes. You will be involved in reviewing documentation, interpreting technical positions, and drafting tailored policy wordings to mitigate identified liabilities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluating legal and tax analysis to determine risk profile and insurability
  • Preparing policy wordings and structuring coverage terms in line with underwriting strategy
  • Engaging with brokers, legal counsel, and clients to understand transaction structures and clarify technical matters
  • Supporting the broader underwriting process through research, internal knowledge sharing, and market insight

Candidate Profile

We are seeking individuals with:

  • A background in tax law (NQ–2 years PQE) or a tax advisory role (Assistant Manager level or similar) within a Big 4 or top-tier accountancy firm
  • Demonstrable experience in drafting tax advice or legal documentation
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to distil complex tax issues into clear, commercial reasoning
  • A genuine interest in transactional work and the broader commercial implications of tax risk

No prior underwriting experience is required; full training will be provided.

What’s on Offer

  • A rare entry route into the specialist field of tax risk insurance
  • Significant exposure to high-value, cross-border transactions from day one
  • A dynamic, supportive team culture with clear long-term progression
  • Competitive compensation and the opportunity to build a niche, future-facing career
