Job description

As a Tax Specialist – Crypto Assets you will lead the identification of emerging tax risks within Crypto assets, and the design and delivery of innovative compliance solutions using HMRC’s Promote, Prevent, Respond framework. The role offers the chance to influence strategy, shape new initiatives, and contribute to international work in this rapidly evolving field.

You will represent the sector in cross-directorate, pipeline, and other technical, delivery, and governance forums presenting at meetings and leading discussions as required.

Travel may be required from time to time to fulfil this role.

Person specification

• Lead the analysis of tax risks relating to Crypto Assets, inclusive of trading, investment, mining, staking and decentralised finance (DeFi)
• Anticipate emerging behaviours, business models and technologies that could pose tax compliance risks.
• Design and oversee the implantation of compliance strategies tailored to the Crypto environment.
• Embed solutions across HMRC that promote compliance, prevent non-compliance and respond effectively to serious tax risk.
• Provide expert advice and leadership within HMRC on tax issues arising from Crypto Asset activity.
• Collaborate across operational, legal, policy and intelligence teams to build integrated approaches to risk management.
• Contribute to the development of internal capability through coaching and knowledge sharing.
• Support strategic portfolios—including Policy, Evasion, and Avoidance—within the Wealthy segment, fostering strong stakeholder relationships and contributing to broader compliance objective.

Essential Criteria

  • Recent, demonstrable experience in tax compliance involving crypto assets and blockchain technologies, particularly within complex regulatory environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of crypto assets, including sector-specific risks, commercial practices, and blockchain
  • This is a tax professional role. Applicants must have completed at least one of the following:
    - Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualification
    - Chartered Accountant (ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA) qualification.
    - Successfully completed the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme, or one of its predecessors (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2).
    - Be a qualified solicitor or barrister with post qualification experience in tax.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to lead high-quality technical work and provide strategic tax recommendation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to influence and engage both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership in complex and challenging environments, with experience developing compliance strategies and delivering under pressure.
