Job description

Welcome to Carpenter Box, one of the largest independent firms in the South East. We have a headcount of over 250 staff across our offices in Worthing, Crawley, Brighton, Chichester, Portsmouth and London. We’re always looking for motivated and excited people who share our values to help us serve our expanding client base and grow our exceptional practice.

The Role:

Carpenter Box is seeking a driven and dynamic Tax Manager to join our Tax Advisory Group, with opportunities available at our Worthing, Crawley, Brighton, and Chichester offices. This role is ideal for a motivated individual looking to specialise in tax within a collaborative and supportive environment. Carpenter Box’s Tax Advisory Group offers advice across a wide range of sectors and tax areas, providing the successful candidate with both hands-on experience and structured training to deepen their tax expertise.

As a Tax Manager at Carpenter Box, you’ll work closely with our experienced tax advisors and liaise directly with clients to provide valuable guidance on complex tax matters.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Liaising with HMRC on clearance applications and tax enquiries, and drafting reports and advisory letters on various tax issues
  2. Preparing supporting calculations, engaging with clients, and attending meetings alongside the team
  3. Training and managing junior staff, while providing support to Directors and Partners
  4. Advising on corporate reconstructions, investor reliefs (e.g., EIS/SEIS), staff incentive schemes, and owner-managed business planning (e.g., remuneration and succession)
  5. Preparing R&D claims, VAT returns, SDLT returns, and reviewing corporate tax computations
  6. Providing guidance on IHT planning, CGT mitigation, and other complex tax matters

The Person:

We are looking for a candidate with a strong tax background, who possesses excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. Experience in corporate taxes (experience in other tax areas is beneficial)
  2. CTA qualification (or AAT/ACA/ACCA qualified and keen to pursue CTA)
  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  4. Good IT proficiency
  5. Excellent teamwork and organisational abilities, including managing timetables and budgets
  6. Analytical skills with a keen eye for detail
  7. Enthusiasm for learning and expanding tax knowledge

At Carpenter Box, we recognise the positive value of diversity and promote equality. We aim at all times to recruit the person who is most suited to the job and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, race, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity, or gender, particularly those underrepresented throughout the finance and accounting industry.

Although this role is advertised as full time, we believe that flexibility at work can provide many significant benefits both to our colleagues and the business. We already work in a hybrid style across all offices and can support different ways of working. If you are interested and have any requirements or needs in the way you would like to work, please apply, and speak to us about this. We will consider flexible options for applicants.
