About the role

In your role as Tax Manager, you will make a meaningful and valued contribution from the outset.

This role provides a great opportunity to support the team in managing tax compliance, while also contributing to select tax advisory and operational matters across the Scheme and its investment entities.

What you will be doing

As a trusted part of the Finance team, you will be responsible for:

This includes preparing tax returns such as corporation tax, partnership tax, and VAT.
  • Liaising with HMRC on tax compliance matters.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders on technical queries related to corporation tax, income tax, VAT, Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), employment taxes, and pension taxes—engaging external advisers where appropriate.
  • Ensuring appropriate tax treatment is applied across all USS investments, working closely with Operations, Investment Accounting, and external custodians.
  • Supporting the day-to-day management of tax risk reporting within the tax function.
  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of the interaction between accounting systems and tax reporting outputs, and proactively identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance best practices and mitigate risk.
  • Building effective relationships across the business and with third-party providers, acting as an ambassador for the Tax team within Finance, Operations, and Pension Service Delivery.
  • Expanding experience by contributing to tax advisory and project-based work, including supporting the investment tax team.

  • Tax compliance experience (and, ideally, exposure to advisory matters), ideally both in practice and in-house.
  • Understanding of UK GAAP / IFRS and the UK tax system.
  • Awareness of international tax principles and operational taxes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collaborative relationships with peers and multiple stakeholders.
