The opportunity:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Tax Claims Team Leader to join the Markel Tax team in our Rugby office (3 days in the office, 2 days working from home) . The role of the Tax Claims Team Leader is to ensure the efficient running of the Claims department so that we deliver the highest level of customer service in order to enhance the client portfolio and to ensure claims are handled fairly and efficiently on behalf of our accountancy clients and affinity groups. The Tax Claims Team Leader is responsible for supporting the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager in leading their team, exemplifying and reinforcing the claims and reserving philosophies, Markel Style and claims procedures through oversight and by their own conduct. The role involves supporting the broader claims management team, through feedback on activity within the tax claims team.
What you’ll be doing:
Reporting to the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager, your duties and responsibilities will be as follows:
Oversee all claims handled within the team. This responsibility involves:
Managing the day to day workflow including claims acceptance and handling
Ensuring claims are handled by the right people
Managing the Tax Claims Team including weekly 1:1s, appraisals, training and development, performance management, peer reviews and assisting with recruitment
Addressing any resourcing issues promptly; escalating to the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager as required
Ensure compliance with regulatory objectives
Provide support and guidance to the team on difficult cases and escalate high value/complex matters further as required.
Monitor the timely progression and payment of claims
Provide sales support where required
Review processes to ensure efficiency
Lead the team with energy and enthusiasm; lead by example and motivate the team.
Exemplify the Markel Style, claims and reserving philosophy through one’s own conduct and encouraging team members to do the same
Liaise closely with the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager to ensure that their vision for the team is being met
Monitor and oversee the progress of individual team members objectives set by the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager to ensure objectives are met
Identify and address any areas for development within the team
Promote delivery of a consistent and high quality claims service and approach
Oversight of claims MI
Support the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager in the collation and monitoring of appropriate management information (MI) in order to identify any claims trends or issues that need to be escalated. When required by the Tax Claims and Consultancy Manager, assist them in:
Preparing a monthly submission on behalf of the team for the Monthly Claims Managers’ Meeting which summarises the team’s KPIs, review of claims activity and identifying any particular issues
Preparing a quarterly report to the Claims Director, DMD and Actuarial team which includes consideration of significant claims, IBNR and any claims trends.
Claims Handling
Take full responsibility and accountability for your own workload of tax claims.
Ensure all claims are handled in a proactive manner and in accordance with Markel policy and guidance.
Have a detailed knowledge of policy wordings and their application for the tax business.
Our must haves:
Have proven leadership capability, or demonstrate the ability to lead a team
Any experience as a claims handler with an in-depth understanding of the team specific business, including management of tax fee protection claims would be beneficial
Have a proven ability of planning and delivering strategies to resolve disputes efficiently and effectively; seeking “win-win” outcomes wherever possible
Have built solid relationships with accountants and demonstrate strong client management skills
Have proven people management skills and will demonstrate the ability to develop and train team members
Have an academic background of degree level or equivalent and/or ACII advanced diploma would be beneficial but not essential
Any experience in HMRC, dealing with tax returns and corporation tax
Previous management/leadership experience
Be a competent user of claims management software and MS packages, including Word, Excel and Outlook with a willingness to learn all necessary in-house systems
Have excellent written and spoken communication skills
