Job description

Title: Tax Accountant (Projects)

Contracts: Fixed Term Contract - 15 months

Hours: Full-Time, 35 hours per week

Persona: Agile (20-40% in office and 3-4 days working from home)

Office Location: Stratford, London

Salary: Starting from £ 47,135 per annum depending on experience

An opportunity has arisen for a Tax Accountant to join our existing Tax team as we launch our new Finance system - a major milestone in the wider L&Q Transformation Programme.

L&Q's in-house Tax Team has responsibility for the tax affairs of the L&Q Group and ensures that the Group's tax strategy is aligned with its charitable purpose and commercial objectives. In addition to preparing and filing the L&Q Group's corporation tax returns, VAT returns and other tax related filings with HM Revenue & Customs, the Tax Team also provides tax advice and support to the business on a wide range of matters.

Reporting to the Tax Manager, you will provide support to the Head of Tax and the Tax Manager in relation to the tax affairs of the L&Q Group.

Main responsibilities of the new Tax Accountant role will include:

  • Documenting, analysing and reporting VAT exceptions and errors for resolution.
  • Processing requests from departments for new accounts and ensuring that these are set up correctly with regards to the Tax Value Matrix in the new ERP system.
  • Providing advice and guidance to relevant departments on all aspects of the new VAT procedures including the correct methods of accounting for VAT recovery and tax calculation in the new ERP system.
  • Detailed analysis of the tax accounting entries required for the purposes of preparing the monthly/quarterly VAT Returns for review by the Tax Manager prior to submission to HMRC in line with set reporting timescales.
  • Reconciliation of the VAT Returns to the general ledgers.
  • Assisting with the provision of tax information to external auditors during interim and annual audit including the provision of background information on certain areas.
  • Assisting with the preparation of the annual corporation tax returns and corporation tax quarterly instalment payment calculations.
  • Responding to general tax queries from colleagues on a timely basis with input from the Head of Tax/Tax Manager as appropriate.

We are looking for strong interpersonal and organisational skills. You will need to be flexible and adaptable to change and able to work to tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experience:

  • Professional accounting and/or tax qualification.
  • Knowledge of general VAT principles, including partial exemption, as well as experience of preparing VAT returns and reconciliations.
  • Experience of using Unit4 ERP system is highly desirable.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills.
  • MS Office skills including advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Ability to analyse large volumes of data with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Confident communicator at all levels.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with strong time management skills and the ability to prioritise work.
