Tank and Vessel Proposals Engineer

1. Introduction

The company provides an extensive range of engineering products and services. Incoming enquiries vary in value from £1,000 to £5 million and can include the design, manufacture, and installation of structural steelwork, vessels, and process pipework. The Proposals Engineer responds to incoming enquiries and invitations to tender, preparing detailed bids, working to tight deadlines, and liaising with estimators. The role requires quickly understanding the scope of work, conducting site visits if necessary, and accurately estimating costs for labour, materials, and equipment. The engineer will produce high-quality proposals that clearly define scope and exclusions, manage customer expectations, and own each proposal until completion.

2. Core Responsibilities, Skills & Duties

  • Experience in designing and estimating storage tanks, process vessels, and pressure vessels, particularly according to PD5500, BS EN 14015, BS EN 13445, Pressure Equipment Directive, and ATEX standards.
  • Mechanical engineering or design background.
  • Solution-oriented approach.
  • Attend project site visits as needed.
  • Maintain professional communication with clients and colleagues to build strong relationships.
  • Assess and quantify resources required for projects.
  • Document and record information for handover to operations.
  • Prepare tender submissions with high presentation standards.
  • Thoroughly conduct duties to prevent unidentified costs.
  • Coordinate contract review and handover meetings upon successful bids.
  • Identify and involve other departments as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as required, acting in the company's best interests.

3. Supervision / Management of People

Provide guidance to other proposals team members and junior staff on tank and vessel design and fabrication requirements.

4. Contacts & Relationships

Frequent contact with internal staff, clients, end users, and site personnel.

5. Decisions - Discretion & Consequences

Prioritize workload, take remedial actions when necessary, and inform managers of changes. Decisions are discussed with managers and subject matter experts, with remedial actions taken accordingly.

6. Resources - Financial & Equipment

Responsible for proper use and safekeeping of equipment and company vehicles.

7. Work Environment

The role involves indoor office work and site visits, with exposure to chemicals, weather conditions, and the need for PPE. Work demands can fluctuate, with deadlines and contractual constraints.
