Job description

Due to rapidly expanding needs, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an energetic, patient, and nurturing individual to join our team as a Learning Support Assistant with some 1:1 support to support a child with special educational needs.

Applications are invited from an enthusiastic, hard-working LSA who has experience of and a passion for supporting children’s learning in school. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and hold the relevant qualifications.

The position is a mixed role to support children with a range of learning. If appointed, you will work alongside a team of teachers and other practitioners to develop and deliver an appropriate curriculum in line with the children’s needs. You will need a strong understanding of the Primary curriculum and your experience of supporting children will be fundamental to ensure the pupils you support are nurtured, motivated, encouraged to learn and achieve realistic goals, both socially and academically.

When working with small groups and on a 1:1 basis, you will be building a consistent, trusting relationship with the child(ren), supporting them as they progress through the school and moving up through the school with them.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with children with additional needs and be committed to providing both educational and basic care support. This role requires someone who is truly patient, nurturing, and dedicated to ensuring the children’s overall well-being and development within a supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

To work under the direct instruction of teaching staff, usually in the classroom with the teacher. Provide general support to the teacher in the care of pupils and management of the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area. Assist teachers in the following:

Support to Teacher

• Provide structured support in accordance with specific work programmes designed and supervised by individual teachers
• Support the teacher in the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans
• Assist in maintaining classroom discipline through the implementation of the school’s behaviour management strategies
• Provide support to pupils to achieve learning goals, e.g. guided reading.
• Assist the teacher with the planning of learning activities
• Assist the teacher in monitoring pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/progress as directed
• Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress, problems etc
• Undertake appropriate basic admin tasks

Support to Pupils

• Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required
• Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
• Assist children in matters of personal needs and their general health including first aid and welfare matters
• Arrange medical/dental visits as appropriate
• Provide general support to pupils ensuring their safety, by complying with good H&S practice

Support to Curriculum

• Assist the teacher in the preparation and development of agreed curriculum activities/materials
• To provide support in literacy/numeracy/SEN strategies
• Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use

Support to School

• Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons you are responsible for or come into contact with
• Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
• Ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
• Liaise effectively with teachers/parents/guardians, welfare officers, health visitors and other professional staff as part of the routine consultative process
• Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
• Attend relevant meetings as required
• Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a child with special educational needs, including autism, ensuring a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
• Assist with the child's daily learning activities, adapting materials and tasks to suit their individual needs and learning style.
• Build a strong, trusting relationship with the child to help them feel safe, supported, and understood, fostering their social, emotional, and academic development.
• Provide basic care needs, including assisting with toileting, feeding, and personal care when required.
• Support the child in their transition through different year groups, moving up through the school alongside them to ensure continuity and stability.
• Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and other support staff to develop and follow an individualised learning plan tailored to the child's needs.
• Use strategies to promote positive behaviour and encourage communication, interaction, and independence.
• Monitor the child's progress, keeping detailed records, and providing feedback to the teaching team and parents/carers.
• Participate in relevant training and development opportunities to further develop your skills in supporting children with special educational needs.

Essential Requirements

• Previous experience working with children in schools, particularly children with special educational needs.
• A genuine passion for working with children and a desire to support them in a long-term, consistent role.
• Ability to provide basic care needs with patience, compassion, and sensitivity.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive, long-term relationships with children, staff, and parents/carers.
• A proactive, flexible approach and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Basic knowledge of safeguarding and child protection practices.

Desirable Qualifications

• Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, or special educational needs (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ Level 2/3, or equivalent).
• Experience with alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS) is a plus.
• Good numeracy/literacy skills.
• First aid training as appropriate (e.g. emergency first aid course).

Knowledge/Skills

• Understanding of relevant policies/codes of practice.
• Good understanding of areas of learning, e.g. literacy, numeracy, science, SEN or Early Years.
• Use of other equipment technology - video, photocopier.
• Well-developed interpersonal skills to be able to relate well to a wide range of people.
• Work constructively as part of a team whilst being able to demonstrate initiative.
• Good communication skills.
• Effective use of ICT to support learning.
• NVQ Level 3 or recognised equivalent.
