Job summary

Wabtec UK in Burton on Trent is seeking a Systems (Mechanical) Engineer Power Collection to act as the technical specialist for our product group. You will deliver engineering solutions that improve safety, reliability and performance, working hands‑on with customers, suppliers and internal teams.

The role requires strong CAD and Office skills, travel when needed, and the ability to develop and govern engineering change processes for the installed base.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) required.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering; rail experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of specification, design, testing and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD and MS Office tools.
  • Excellent communication and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and travel to customer/supplier sites as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide system engineering knowledge, experience and skills to Wabtec UK.
  • Act as lead engineer for Power Collection product group.
  • Technical authority for engineering change for Wabtec UK installed base.
  • Develop, document, and deliver technical solutions for product‑safety, reliability growth, cost reduction and obsolescence management.
  • Produce and check technical documentation including Technical Instructions, Overhaul specifications, production queries, technical bulletins, technical reports, technical specifications, technical queries, work instructions, conditional assessments, calculations, concessions and ECOs.
  • Checking and approving technical drawings, Engineering BOMs, customer TI´s and any technical documentation produced by mechanical engineer.
  • Reliability & Life Cycle Cost management (LCC).
  • Support investigations into failures of systems and components, determine root cause and present findings.
  • Act as the main technical liaison for projects, customers and suppliers; represent Wabtec at technical meetings with customers and suppliers.
  • Interface with senior project stakeholders on technical issues.

Who will you be working with?

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our team at Wabtec UK based in Burton on Trent we support our customers through maintenance and operation optimisation with customised solutions for spare parts, repair, and overhaul activities on existing trains.

How will you make a difference?

As a Systems Engineer, you will act as the technical specialist for our product group, delivering engineering solutions that enhance safety, reliability, and performance. This is a hands‑on role requiring strong technical expertise and collaboration with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.

What will your typical day look like?
  • Provide system engineering knowledge, experience and skills to Wabtec UK.
  • Act as lead engineer for Power Collection product group.
  • Technical authority for engineering change for Wabtec UK installed base.
  • Develop, document, and deliver technical solutions for product‑safety, reliability growth, cost reduction and obsolescence management.
  • Produce and check technical documentation including Technical Instructions, Overhaul specifications, production queries (PQs), technical bulletins, technical reports, technical specifications, technical queries (TQs), work instructions, conditional assessments, calculations, concessions and Engineering change orders (ECOs).
  • Checking and approving technical drawings, Engineering bill of materials (EBoMs), customer TI´s and any technical documentation produced by mechanical engineer.
  • Reliability & Life Cycle Cost (LCC) management (where Wabtec are both OEM / design authority and maintainer).
  • Support investigations into failures of systems and components, determine root cause and present findings.
  • Customer support – customer concessions, customer queries, engineering issues (inc. warranty technical investigation), customer FAI support, conditional assessment and joint investigations, NIRs, Product Failure investigations (non‑NIR).
  • Act as the main technical liaison for projects, customers and suppliers; represent Wabtec at technical meetings with customers and suppliers.
  • Interface with senior project stakeholders on technical issues.
  • Conform to business processes and procedures, attending design reviews, executing PRIP for project mobilization, attending Gate reviews.
  • Management of project Technical hazard and Risk register following CSM‑RA regulations.
  • Manages Product Certification and standards compliance.
  • Support the Wabtec UK tender process – technical solutions for tenders.
  • Ensure assigned tasks are completed in line with timescales as agreed with Engineering management.
  • Perform any other duties within capabilities, training or experience.
What do we want to know about you?
