Job description

The Opportunity

At Lola Cars, we are building something special.

As one of the most iconic names in motorsport, we design, build, engineer and race world-class race and road cars from our new headquarters at Silverstone, and we need exceptional people behind every part of that journey.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Systems Engineer to join the Trackside Engineering team as we continue our pursuit of engineering excellence and championship success in Formula E as we head into the Gen 4.0 era.

This role is central to the integration, optimisation, and operation of all vehicle electronic and control systems. Sitting at the intersection of electronics, software, control systems, and race engineering, the Systems Engineer will work closely with performance, powertrain, and trackside teams to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions that directly influence on-track competitiveness.

What You Will Be Doing
Systems Integration & Management
  • Lead the integration and operation of all car electronic and control systems.
  • Manage overall system architecture, including hardware/software interfaces.
  • Ensure system reliability, configuration control, and performance across test and race events.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate sensors, actuators, wiring, and vehicle subsystems.
Control Systems Development
  • Develop, implement, and maintain real-time embedded control strategies for:
  • Powertrain and torque delivery.
  • Energy management systems.
  • Braking and vehicle dynamics systems.
  • Thermal management.
  • Design and implement control algorithms using model-based tools (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow).
  • Support validation through simulation, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and rig testing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of control strategies and system performance.
Race & Test Event Support
  • Support all trackside activities, including pre-event preparation and setup.
  • Configure system parameters for practice, qualifying, and race sessions.
  • Monitor live telemetry to optimise system and vehicle performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve faults in real-time under race conditions.
  • Perform post-event analysis and identify areas for improvement.
Energy & Performance Management
  • Monitor and manage battery systems, energy deployment, and thermal conditioning.
  • Support development and execution of energy optimisation strategies in line with Formula E regulations.
  • Analyse telemetry data to evaluate system behaviour and performance trends.
Software, Data & Analysis
  • Manage ECU configuration, calibration, software updates, and diagnostic tools.
  • Support integration of ECU systems with auxiliary systems (e.g. dashboards, data loggers, power electronics).
  • Analyse data using tools such as ATLAS and Pi Toolbox.
  • Produce technical reports and maintain documentation for system development, version control, and traceability.
Technical Liaison
  • Act as a key point of contact for FIA standard systems, ECU, and battery suppliers.
  • Work collaboratively across performance, powertrain, chassis, and trackside engineering teams.
  • Support cross-functional delivery of high-performance solutions.
Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure all vehicle systems comply with FIA technical regulations and safety standards.
  • Follow and promote high-voltage (HV) safety procedures and best practice.
