Overview

Are you an ambitious engineer looking to develop your expertise in Systems Engineering, or an experienced Systems Engineer seeking an opportunity to apply your skills within a technically challenging environment?

A renowned engineering consultancy, recognised globally for its expertise in nuclear engineering, defence, energy transition and complex infrastructure, is looking to appoint a Systems Engineer to join its established team in Derby.

Working on complex defence programmes, you'll be part of a collaborative engineering team where technical excellence, continuous improvement and effective teamwork are central to delivering successful outcomes.

This role offers flexibility for someone looking to build on an existing engineering foundation and develop into Systems Engineering, as well as those already working in the discipline who want to broaden their experience. You'll be involved in managing engineering requirements, collaborating with engineers across multiple disciplines and maintaining the quality and consistency of technical information.

Whether you bring established Systems Engineering experience or the ambition and aptitude to develop in this field, you'll have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution while continuing to grow your technical capabilities.

Key Duties
  • Maintain and manage engineering requirements within a dedicated database, ensuring information remains accurate, consistent and up to date
  • Collaborate with engineers across multiple disciplines to review, update and manage technical requirements
  • Follow established engineering processes and procedures, ensuring work meets the required standards
  • Identify opportunities to refine processes, improve consistency and enhance ways of working
  • Prepare clear, practical training materials and guidance to support colleagues in following established processes
  • Communicate effectively with the wider engineering team to resolve queries and maintain the quality of engineering information
  • Apply and develop your understanding of Systems Engineering principles within a complex, regulated defence environment
Candidate Requirements

We're keen to hear from candidates who can bring relevant engineering knowledge, a proactive approach and a desire to contribute to a wider engineering team. This could be through direct Systems Engineering experience or a transferable engineering background with the aptitude to develop further.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience within a regulated or safety-critical industry, such as nuclear, defence, aerospace or similar.
  • Experience in Systems Engineering, or an engineering background in Mechanical or Electrical with a genuine interest in developing expertise in this discipline.
  • An understanding of systems thinking, engineering requirements or structured engineering processes
  • A methodical, organised approach with strong attention to detail
  • The ability to follow established processes while confidently identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to collaborate with engineers and wider stakeholders
  • The ability to produce clear, accurate documentation and training materials
  • A proactive, growth-minded approach and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • A degree in Engineering or another relevant STEM subject, or equivalent demonstrable experience

Familiarity with requirements management software, particularly IBM Rational DOORS, would be beneficial but is not essential, as training will be provided.

What You'll Get in Return
  • The opportunity to contribute to complex, long-term defence engineering programmes
  • The chance to develop specialist Systems Engineering expertise or build on your existing experience
  • Training in specialist engineering tools and processes, including DOORS where required
  • The opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers across multiple technical disciplines
  • Opportunities to broaden your technical capabilities and progress your career within a global engineering organisation
  • A collaborative working environment focused on technical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Access to an employee assistance programme, wellbeing resources and a range of lifestyle benefits, including retail and leisure discounts, cycle-to-work scheme and eye care vouchers
