Job description

Job ID: 2950054 | Amazon Development Centre Ireland Limited

TrafficShift is a service within the Global Connectivity and Network Availability organisation. Global Connectivity is the border network that provides secure, highly available, low-cost, and performant connectivity to and from everywhere in the world for AWS; and Network Availability provides the services that detect, alarm, correlate and mitigate every kind of network impairment to provide availability for the AWS network that is indistinguishable from perfect.

TrafficShift is a networking service that is foundational to the success of the AWS network availability engineering. The TrafficShift service enables fast event mitigation and safe deployment configuration updates and operating system upgrades to the global Amazon network.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

Working on our team, you’ll join a diverse team of software and system development engineers. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety, security, and availability for our internal customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion. You will join a group that sets the direction of their product and iterates fast to continuously improve it and delight customers.

Key job responsibilities

A System Development Engineer within the TrafficShift team at AWS owns the design and development of key components of our network availability service. You will get to:

  1. Develop world-class software systems for automating Amazon's network.
  2. Provide technical direction to the team and identify areas of focus.
  3. Create and review software design documentation.
  4. Own the operational excellence of the software you put into production.
  5. Contribute to improving our documentation, processes, and tools so that we improve our performance as a team.
A day in the life
  • You deliver technology solutions that are tested, maintainable, optimized, and which generate positive feedback.
  • You deliver designs for components that solve defined technical problems.
  • You demonstrate the ability to identify risks and mitigations and make technical trade-offs in your designs and your team’s designs.
  • You are able to work independently and with your team to complete projects successfully.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience (non-internship) in professional software development.
  • Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems.
  • Experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering.
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in an Agile environment using the Scrum methodology.
  • Experience working in a high pace DevOps environment.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).
  • Experience with Python (preferred), Ruby, or Java.

Amazon is an equal opportunities employer. We believe passionately that employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We make recruiting decisions based on your experience and skills. We value your passion to discover, invent, simplify and build.
