Job description

Our client is an established, high-technology electronics and engineering business based in Shrivenham, Wiltshire. The organisation designs and manufactures bespoke and off-the-shelf product lines across telecommunications, defence, and power/electrification markets, working with product management, business development, and a varied customer base to shape and deliver its next generation of high-performance products.

The business combines a big-business mentality with a small-business culture. A close-knit engineering team where people are given genuine opportunity to develop their careers and specialisms.

Role Overview

Systems Architects engage with the problem space at the earliest possible stage - whether that's responding to product management on new roadmap ideas, supporting business development on invitations to tender, or working directly with customers to capture requirements. The role drives the capture and maturation of product specifications from initial concept through to manufacture.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Systems Architect decomposes system and sub-system requirements, underpinning collaboration with the wider development team. The role guides technical activity, reviews team designs, and orchestrates the verification activities required to evidence the organisation's solutions across telecommunications, custom defence, and power/electrification product lines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop new product concepts from inception through to manufacture
  • Conduct modelling and analysis to ensure products meet the rigorous demands of end users
  • Decompose system and sub-system requirements to underpin collaboration across development teams
  • Guide technical activities and review team designs to orchestrate verification and evidence solutions
  • Team with engineers to resolve technical requirements arising from development activities
  • Engage with product management, business development, and customers to capture and mature product specifications
  • Share and disseminate personal expertise throughout the technical team
  • Drive continuous improvement of the engineering department's functional capability
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Honours degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with many years of design practice
  • First-class expertise in designing products for manufacture
  • Whole-system knowledge of state-of-the-art radio architectures
  • Solid grounding across all aspects of engineering, beyond a single specialist discipline
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Background in the design of telecommunications networks
  • Experience architecting full-stack software for custom hardware solutions
  • Familiarity with engineering quality management processes and design for regulatory compliance
Qualifications
  • An honours degree in a relevant engineering discipline is essential
Person Specification

Technical depth in a specific engineering discipline is a defining characteristic of this role, but the organisation equally values the ability to operate across the full breadth of engineering. The successful candidate will bring creativity and a passion for continuous improvement, a can-do attitude focused on completing tasks, and strong collaborative relationships built on trust and respect. They will listen to different perspectives to evaluate, shape, or persuade technical direction, enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge while learning from others, and consistently put company goals ahead of individual or team interests.

Remuneration and Benefits
  • Company bonus scheme, sharing in the wider success of the business
  • Company pension scheme
  • Option to purchase additional annual leave
  • Tax-efficient share purchase plan rewarding long tenure
  • Employee assistance programme covering family wellbeing
  • Annual summer and Christmas events, plus informal team socials
