System Studies Engineer - HVDC Control & Protection

A Snapshot of your day

As a Control & Protection Engineer for HVDC Studies, you will work within a team of HVDC project management and engineering specialists to design and deliver full HVDC control and protection solutions for wind farm grid connections and interconnectors, utilizing a new transient network analysis laboratory located in Manchester.

You will report to the Engineering Manager – HVDC C&P and will be responsible for providing engineering work packages aligned with project and business objectives.

Let’s talk about you

Your responsibilities include:

  • Performing dynamic performance studies during tender and project execution phases of HVDC projects.
  • Optimizing the dynamic behavior of the HVDC converter, including black-start, network restoration, grid forming controls, and multi-terminal systems, in accordance with customer and national grid code requirements.
  • Analyzing sub-synchronous torsional/control interactions and the harmonic converter impedance, as well as potential interactions between the HVDC converter and other controlled devices in the power system.
  • Developing and validating simulation models for EMT simulation tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, and EMTP-RV.
  • Providing customer training on simulation models and presenting study results to clients.
  • Continuously improving and standardizing simulation models, study procedures, methods, and documentation processes.
  • Supporting project management in technical discussions, participating in customer meetings, and coordinating external partners.

Your skills and qualifications

  • University degree in electrical power engineering or control engineering, with a PhD and industry experience.
  • Strong knowledge of high voltage applications, power transmission systems, power electronics, and HVDC technology.
  • Expertise in control engineering and modeling of HVDC systems in both time and frequency domains.
  • Proficient in power system simulation software (PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, EMTP-RV).
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written); German language skills are a plus.
  • Excellent team skills, initiative, and customer focus.
