Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a System Lead - Inverter to be based at our customer's site in Gaydon.Our Embedded Systems Solutions department (ESS) encompasses all activities outlined under the Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) process framework, including systems engineering, software engineering, coding, and all levels of functional testing. Beyond core development, ESS also integrates critical supporting processes such as project management, risk assessment, functional safety, and cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with ASPICE standards and delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality embedded systems & solutions.
The Role:We are seeking a System Lead - Inverter to drive the mechanical design, development, and validation of inverter enclosures and assemblies for hybrid and electric vehicle applications. This role focuses on delivering robust mechanical solutions that meet performance, thermal, manufacturability, and durability requirements within tight automotive timelines.
The Lead Engineer will work under the guidance of the Power Conversion Leader and Inverter Expert and will ensure seamless integration, technical optimization, and production readiness of the traction inverter system.
Area of ResponsibilityMechanical Design & Development
- Lead the end-to-end mechanical development of:
- Define and manage mechanical interfaces with motor, battery, and vehicle packaging teams.
- Ensure design compliance with mechanical performance targets, including:
- Strength, vibration, thermal management, ingress protection, etc.
Design Optimization & CAD Management
- Own CAD model and drawing development using NX software.
- Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM), design-for-assembly (DFA), and cost-optimization principles.
- Manage tolerance stack-ups, GD&T, and interface control documents.
Thermal & Structural Integration
- Collaborate with thermal and structural CAE teams to ensure performance under shock, vibration, and thermal cycling conditions.
- Lead Root Cause Analysis and countermeasures for thermal, mechanical, and sealing failures.
Validation Planning & Execution
- Define and execute mechanical DVP&R plans, including:
- Mechanical shock analysis
- Thermal aging and material compatibility testing
- Support component and system-level validation on test benches and vehicles.
- Interface with suppliers and labs to coordinate testing and issue resolution.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with electrical design, manufacturing, purchasing, and quality teams.
- Provide technical direction to suppliers, ensuring manufacturing readiness and issue resolution during development and launch phases.
- Participate in design reviews, DFMEA, and failure analysis activities.
Project Planning & Execution
- Proficiency in 3D CAD design and 2D drawing creation (Siemens NX).
- Strong knowledge of aluminum casting, injection molding, thermal interface materials, and sealing systems.
- Experience with mechanical testing, validation standards (e.g., LV124, IEC, UL), and root-cause analysis tools.
Technical Leadership
- Expertise in HV inverter systems (>400V), including liquid cooling and high-voltage creepage/clearance requirements.
- Familiarity with EMC shielding techniques and their mechanical implementation.
- Exposure to ISO 26262 and automotive SPICE processes.
- Prior experience in supplier management and product launch support.
