Job description

Systems Engineer - Chassis Motion Control Role Summary

As a Systems Engineer - Chassis Motion Control, you will lead the design, development, and validation of advanced vehicle motion control systems, including electronic stability control (ESC), brake control, active suspension, and steering systems. You will be responsible for system architecture, requirements engineering, and ensuring functional safety compliance to standards like ISO 26262.

Function Overview

You will support the delivery of the Driver Modes System across current and future vehicle platforms for a premium Midlands-based OEM, managing the life cycle from definition through to model delivery, validation, and final sign-off.

Key Stakeholders
  • Customers

  • Product Owners

  • Scrum Masters

  • Technical Specialists

  • Electrical, Design & Release (ED&R) Engineers

Key Responsibilities
  • Define system architecture for chassis motion control systems (braking, steering, suspension).

  • Develop functional and non-functional requirements based on vehicle dynamics targets and OEM/customer specifications.

  • Build system-level models (MATLAB/Simulink) to simulate and validate control strategies.

  • Translate stakeholder requirements into detailed system specifications with full traceability.

  • Collaborate closely with software and hardware teams on interface and integration requirements.

  • Apply ISO 26262 principles: conduct HARA (Hazard Analysis & Risk Assessment), define safety goals, and support safety case development.

  • Define and execute validation plans, including simulation, bench testing, and vehicle testing for dynamic performance, fail-safe operation, and edge cases.

  • Ensure full alignment across requirements, design, verification, and validation processes.

Essential Skills & Experience
  • Degree in Automotive, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Minimum 6 years' industry experience, preferably in automotive motion/chassis control.

  • Proven delivery of complex mechatronic systems from concept to production.

  • Strong background in systems engineering, including requirements management and change control processes.

  • Experienced with ISO 26262 functional safety for active control systems.

  • Proficient in tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, INCA, CANape, CANalyzer, DOORS, Polarion.

  • Solid knowledge of vehicle dynamics, control systems, Embedded systems, and chassis electronics (ECUs, sensors, actuators).

  • Skilled in issue resolution techniques (eg, 8D, Fishbone, Root Cause Analysis).

  • Practical experience with Jira, Confluence, and systems documentation tools like Lucidchart.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.

  • Full UK driving license.

Desirable Skills
  • Deep understanding of vehicle dynamics, particularly in active systems domains.

  • Experience delivering integrated motion control systems for major OEMs.

  • Proficiency in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools (eg, MSOSA).

  • Hands-on vehicle testing experience, including both subjective and objective evaluation of active chassis systems.

  • Knowledge of automotive networks, diagnostics, fault handling, and related development tools.
