Job description

Job Title: Synthetic Chemist

BAE Systems Land UK is seeking a Synthetic Chemist to join our innovative R&D chemistry team. This role involves supporting new technology development for future materials and assisting in product and process development within small and medium volume environments. The goal is to ensure our products meet high quality and performance standards.

The successful candidate will design and synthesize precursors for polymer systems to support ongoing product development. Responsibilities also include developing in-house synthetic chemistry facilities and methodologies. The role entails approximately a 50:50 split between practical laboratory work and desk-based tasks, with responsibilities varying based on project demands. Additional support for non-synthesis projects and team activities may be required.

Main Responsibilities

• Synthesize precursors for polymer systems following established synthetic routes
• Develop new synthetic routes for known and novel organic compounds
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers to scale up synthetic processes
• Maintain and improve onsite synthetic chemistry capabilities to meet current and future needs
• Ensure all synthesis activities adhere to safety standards and legislation
• Compile and maintain safety and process documentation
• Support other team processes as needed

Key Skills and Qualifications

• Experience analyzing organic compounds using NMR, Mass Spectrometry, FT-IR, and HPLC
• Experience with inert atmosphere techniques such as Schlenk lines and gloveboxes
• Experience handling hazardous chemicals
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing workload to meet project goals
• Strong safety documentation skills
• Excellent communication skills for data presentation and scientific documentation
• Recognized qualification in Chemistry
