General Function:
Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching participants proper stroke and swim technique, and teaching water safety. The Swim Instructor will work with staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage members, guests, and staff, ensuring high-quality service.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 16 years.
- Red Cross Lifeguarding/YMCA Lifeguarding preferred; must become YMCA Lifeguarding certified within six months of hire.
- Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Lesson certification preferred; must become YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certified within six months of hire.
- CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification.
- Complete and maintain required trainings such as New Employee Orientation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, and Sexual Harassment, upon hire and annually.
- Satisfactory criminal background and Child Protective Services checks.
Essential Functions:
- Support the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA.
- Promote a professional environment by modeling caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Lead programs that strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
- Teach swim lessons to assigned groups during scheduled sessions without absence.
- Ensure all equipment and supplies are prepared before classes.
- Maintain skills checklists for each student during sessions.
- Be familiar with swim level skills for which certified to teach.
- Communicate with participants about their progress and answer questions.
- Wear proper attire, such as an approved one-piece swimsuit, or professional attire when appropriate.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
- Distribute certificates at the end of each session.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
- Act as a leader during emergencies and report incidents per Emergency Communication Plan.
- Ensure a safe environment for members, guests, and participants, following the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
- Maintain relevant certifications.
- Adhere to association standards and guidelines.
- Participate in YMCA fundraising efforts, including Annual Support and United Way Campaigns.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure excellent member experiences.
Skills and Abilities:
- Respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.
- Pass the lifeguard water test and ongoing drills.
- Remain alert and attentive.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
- Hear noises and recognize distress signals.
- Continuously scan the pool area with clear vision.
- Perform strenuous physical tasks for water rescues.
- Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances and in loud environments.
